Hello Paceline braintrust:

I am wondering if anyone can suggest a set of cheapish, good 26" FAT slick tires for my $50 commuter. It is an old steel Fisher that appears to have heaps of clearance based on the 2.1" knobbies on there now. I was thinking of Schwalbe Big Apple 2.35", but they are costly (at least for a junker, anyways)

Other ideas have been Kenda K-Rads, Maxxis Hookworms, or possibly others. The first two are street/BMX-y type tires and I am not too sure they grip well in bad weather - what do you think?

I ride year round in the PNW, so wet weather is a consideration.

Someone was selling some Fat Frank's here for a pretty good price. Put out a WTB.

I've got Big Apples, and they're awesome.

If you just want to try some semi-slicks, I have some furious fred tires you could try. They are 2.0, but damn fast. I ran them tubeless, but they are hardly used. I was going to sell them on Craigslist for $30.

If you don't end up buying some used ones on here, I recommend the hookworms you already mentioned.

I've been running K-Rads and really liking them. They do fine through patches of sugar sand and I've ridden trails with no problem. They do great in on wet roads. Probably useless in mud and nothing is good on wet leaves on pavement.

Fat Franks or Big Apples. They are worth it.

If you're still looking-- check out the Resist Nomad--26" x 2.25" tires. Available with black or tan sidewalls and have minimal branding. They got lots of favorable reviews for a less expensive tire.

Thanks folks. As this is for a $50 bike (rode it this morning and it shifts like an $800 bike!) I don't want to spend $150 on tires. Cheap Big Apples seem fine to me. They make a 2.15" model that comes for low $$.

Kinda K-Rads are also $30CAD each, and I have heard good things about those.

I have a pair of 2" Kojaks with less than 50 miles on them, I'd sell you for $50.

$50 bike? Take a side cutters and cut the knobs on your existing tires off, or as low as you can go. Instant semi-slick, custom to boot.

Sorry a brief hijack.

Any idea where to find these in the ever illusive 700x45c size?

I've had luck finding them at BMX vendors. It looks like you can buy them direct from Demolition (part of the same distro co. that includes Resist). They only have them with red sidewalls....not sure how much of look that is for you.

My e-bike came with Schwalbe Big Ben 26 x 2.15 and I've been very happy with them. Got one flat due to a staple. Short of having enough material to stop the staple (and ruin the ride quality), I don't think any tire would have avoided that flat. I've been looking into other tires that qualify for class three e-bikes and Maxxis makes one called the Gypsy that is available in 26 x 2.1. I'll probably try those next. Not that you're looking for e-bike specific tires, but these tires get good reviews for regular bikes as well.

I had a bike with a Hookworm on the back, really great, no problems. One of my favourite tyres ever. Only changed it when I got into lighter 26s.

For riding on pavement anything bigger than 2" would be overkill for me. Take a look at Performance Bike house brands for inexpensive options that have worked well for me for $9-18 each.
