like in motogp and F1, where they have sticky "qualifiers" that last for 1-2 laps...some really sticky tires for stages that finish with a descent. figure some enterprising guys could swap to their properly outfitted descent bike with sticky rubber just before the top and bomb the descent, in the rain especially. from the looks of all the crashes this week in the rain it was all down to poor traction, not something that would be addressed by disc brakes and "better modulation".
there's already a precedent: i remember the big 1 day massive climbing pro-race back around 2000 in colorado with a rough gravel road descent, and 1-2 guys (maybe scott moninger?) switched to suspended MTBs for the descent. edit: found it (http://www.canadiancyclist.com/dailynews.php?id=2861&title=Red%20Zinger)
