VO makes a fluted crankset that purports to be 6 to 10 speed compatible. How is that possible and how would a 10 speed chain work on that setup reliably. I would think you would need different chainrings for a 10 speed. Anyone have any experience with these cranks specifically or an opinion on whether this claimed compatibility is possible. Thanks.

Chainrings are more or less backwards compatible. That crank is certainly fine with 6-10s and I'd think would also work great with 11s.

I think the 6-10 rating holds. But going to 11 is hit or miss. On one bike a VO 50.4 played fine with 11 speed ultegra or KMC chain. I then moved the parts to another bike by the same maker and had a heck of a time with the chain getting stuck between the rings on a front downshift... I tried all sorts of things but eventually threw in the towel and went to a White Industries VBC which works fine with these 11 speed chains...

The chain fit on the chainrings themselves OK (not too narrow) but got jammed between the chainrings?

Good to know, I never would have thought about that aspect.

It should work fine. My gravel bike has a 1983 5 speed mountain bike crank with 10 speed chain.
