Great article about Jim Papadopoulos and his search for why a bicycle stays upright:

“Everybody knows how to ride a bike, but no one knows how we ride bikes.”

What???...Where is Ti_Designs when you need him??:banana:;)

Because it is leaning against a wall ?

The bicycle has the complete opposite effect for me. I look forward to turning my brain off!

Mine actually hasn’t and I have the scars to prove it.

I have some background in control systems.

My long distance bike has 69 mm of trail. I would not want to descend sub freezing mountain passes shivering with a meager 45 mm of trail. My bike has saved my shivering bacon more than a few times.

Although the equations of transfer function may or may not be well modeled, I'm not coming off at speed.

So who's ever done a Bode plot for a bicycle? ;)

The article looks interesting so I will read it. Thanks

Who knows.

I'm always snickering to myself when low trail fanboys report high speed shimmy.

Wikipedia has quite a bit of related stuff on this topic:

Great articles. Now can someone post links as to why triathletes bikes can't stay upright in any course other than a straight line.

i like bikes with -10 degrees of phase margin

almost, but because i like my bikes slightly on the unstable (ie, "flickable", "a little bit twitchy," etc) side, this rLocus needs an open loop plant pole in the RHP. just slide that integrator SP1 (ie, the bike) over to the right a bit...

Some of us aren't so mad or quick to act.

You mean you have a lower gain?
