ther than offering a compact crankset, Shimano hasn't really offered anything new to their higher end lines, like DA, since late 2003, no? Anything on the way?

Prototype electronic shifting is being tested with pro racers (I saw some at Flanders.) Perhaps that's what has the engineers busy.

I personally think this is a credit to Shimano. Although I am a Campy rider, I actually respect the way Shimano tries to engineer things right the first time, and resists making constant, incremental upgrades.

For almost the last ten years, this is pretty standard for shimano.
Groups are usually completely changed about every 5 years, they've
been doing that with xt, xtr, ultegra, and dura ace. (and most of the
others too, not that i pay that much attention.

Campagnolo on the other hand seems to evolve the parts whenever a
new one is ready, usually a few at a time, something almost every year.

The trend in cycling is more carbon and more drugs. Shimano's line is split, all the carbon and drugs wound up in their fishing equipment line. You should have seen the one that got away!
