Those are sooooo gross. When they start to get big enough that they jiggle and move in a different direction than the rest of the leg, it's time to keep them covered.

That's Hincapie, right?
Vericose veins like that have no major risks other than aesthetic.
Ones that big can be taken care of very easily with a minor operation, but lesser ones can be done with a simple office procedure.

I think in the lesser active their may be increased risk of DVT, not sure in the more athletic.

I had a friend who had the exact same vericose vein condition. They lookd just like those in the pic. He had them surgically removed, which was pretty easy. They grew back, and he's had a second operation. He said they never bothered him, except aesthetically. Pretty ugly, for sure, but I don't think they present any health issue that I know of.

I have something similar. And it's just on my left leg. I think it's cool.

What does the guy behind you on a climb say about it? Must be a bit distracting.

That's my excuse for taking up the rear on climbs. :D

Hopefully G.H. uses these things after a ride. Those varicosities look very bad and that puts him at risk for DVT

No risk for DVT in varicose veins.
The only risks include bleeding, superficial thrombophlebitis and ulceration.
