Looks like he gets cut on the arm just at the line.
Something along the barrier?

I thought the hands were all foam?!?!

at least the one I got in 04; and about 2 mm thick. At that speed I'm sure it could make quite a nasty cut.

hard to believe a foam hand could do that. I hope it wasn't something more devious. In this world you never know what freak is out there with maybe a razor hidden in the thing.

I was wondering that too. some whack job. do they have those in europe though? I thought the world's crazies were all over here?

Phil and Paul were looking for crash, and in at least 15 minutes of
replays, (edit: every time they showed the side shot),
you can clearly see the blood on Thor's
arm as he coasts across the line. In the overhead shot, you can
see Thor turn his head and look down at his arm, just at the line.

At 60+ km/h, it wouldn't take much contact to rip open, if you hit
something sharp. Looks like a bad gash. Yikes.

My Tivo cut out the last 15 mintues of coverage. Did Phil and Paul ever notice the blood on his arm as he crossed the line, apparent as Grant says on virtually every replay?

Even if they stop watching the monitors, you'd think they could hire someone who did keep watching, and feed them a little accurate info once in a while.

It sucks when the stage goes overtime, and the vcr/tivo stops!
That has happened to me so many times.

I never heard them say "hey, look, you can see his arm cut".
Finally, they started speculating about the big foam hands,
and looking at the replay along the barriers. But they missed
the side shots of the camera angle showing finish line, Thor's
arm is totally covered in blood as he goes past the camera.

Phil and Paul stopped paying attention to the monitors. That's really sad. They were probably paying more attention to their 'bigger' story: Hincapie getting the jersey...

You can set it to record extra time. I always give it an extra half hour or hour on sporting events. The mountain stages, in particular, can run way over the scheduled time.

wasnt it Monica Seles that got stabbed? Couldnt some irate fan do something as well? Conceal a razor blade in my PMU hand and when that darn rider from Norway comes by...

Seriously, has anyone yet discovered some actual news about what happened? The brief report and photo on cyclingnews.com make it appear as though the cut is pretty serious. The attendant is applying serious pressure to the cut, and there's LOTS of blood. A nut with a razor needn't have been looking to cut Hushovd in particular, just anyone who came close to him.

Tonya Harding has had a grudge against Norway since the 1994 Olympics. She could not find a knee-whacker so she hired a foam hand razor goon.

Maybe the culprit was a wire holding the barrier together? If it was a blade, they should circumcise the owner of the blade with same, atmo. I mean, circumcise him twice.

VeloSnooze reports that the cut is not that bad and it will not prevent him from being on the line in the morning. It is completely feasable that a piece of cardboard could cause that type of cut when Thor whacked it going as fast as he was. A hidden razor blade  Let's spray riders with water laced with DMSO and EPO in the mountains, the DMSO will act as a carrier to move the EPO into the riders bloodstream. Somebody's been listening to too much Art Bell :D

I'm betting on it being a freak accident.

The PMU hand I got in Bordeaux in 2003 is actually a hard, flexible plastic, not cardboard. It's about a millimeter or two thick and definitely thin and sharp enough that it would slice flesh open at 60+kph.

Bum luck for Thor, but he was already out of that sprint. I thought it was great that GH was crafty enough to snag that last time bonus, which ultimately gave him the MJ.

eurosport reported that a spectator's camera cut hushovd (http://eurosport.com/cycling/tour-de-france/2006/sport_sto918636.shtml)

coverage had an interview with Boonen who said he pulled up when hit by a camera....apparently McEwen had the same experience.

Velo news is reporting that Thor's doctor indicatd he will ride tomorrow.

I know it's a lot of blood....

but his heartbeat would have been over 190 bpm, so that's alot of pressure...and anyone who's cut their head will be able to tell you about blood under pressure.

He'll be back (yeah, like we talked!) tomorrow! He's a champ, he's well-spoken! :)

If you look at the replay right before he hits the PMU hand, you can see a guys arms fly up and a camera fly out of his hand. Phil and Paul missed it. The hand partially shields what really happened.

It was one of those giant plastic green hands they hand out at the race. I read they were banned for the last two kilometers but it still cut hip up like a razor.
