OK, i know this has been discussed at length. Can you guys just help impart some wisdom on me here, please

I have:
9s XT RD (M761 SGS it seems)
5700 Shifters (10s)

this looks to be the exact XT rear derailer I have:

I do have a 5700 Rear Derailer (mid cage) but I'm curious if the XT RD will work because it clears the 11-42 cassette i have with ease.

I see several options ahead of me, in order of my perceived likeliness i will use them:

1. buy a smaller 10s cassette that the 105 RD will clear (this avoids having to use either of the wolftooth adapters, but limits the smallness of my climbing gear)
2. use a wolftooth roadlink to help the 105 RD clear the 11-42 cassette.
3. use a wolftooth tanpan (provided it is compatible with the 5700 shifter & 9s XT rear derailer cable pull combination I have)

thanks for your help.

I've always heard that a 10 speed STI would correctly shift a 9 speed Shimano MTB rear derailleur.
