Do guys ever take a hit for this? Most of the time its the worker bees doing it so is it overlooked because thats just part of the job?
It just looks funny and the comentators seem to love to point it out?

I had the good fortune to ride in a team car at the Tour of California a couple of years ago. The Directeur Sportif handed out plenty of "Rocket Bottles" along the route. He was always cautious to look for commisaires and commented that penalties would be handed out on the road but not after the stage was complete. He's driven many Tours (and raced a number as well), so I got the sense that it was something that the race referees often let slide unless it was in their immediate line of sight.

it really depends on how fast the car is going and how long they hold onto the bottle. Nibali made the mistake of holding on at 60mph, and got booted from a race.

Probably not a big deal when its done for a few seconds as some of the recent TV coverage has shown. Definitely a issue in the case of Nibali during last years Vuelta.

And of course, basketball is a non-contact sport.

Its 10secs and release, no problems. Any more and it's a 150 SWF fine and a 10sec time penalty

Voekler today stickied a bottle behind his back and didn't even look at it before throwing it to the side of the road. Then they gave him another bottle, which he kept.
