By removing the thin washer that is currently on with a 10 speed cassette, can I then run an 11 speed cassette?

Yes. That washer should be 1.85mm thick if you want to confirm.

Are you sure?

The washer that is commonly used on 10s cassettes is less than 1.85mm.

An R45 hub has to be 11-speed to take a 11-speed cassette. There were previously 10-speed versions. You can identify the 11-speed ones by a light machined stripe around the free hub about half way across. You can use 10-speed cassettes with the spacer that comes with the hub or use 11-speed without any spacer (from the cassette or from the hub).

first things first, are we talking campy or shimano/sram here?

generally, if everything is together as it should be, as 11.4 said, the OP probably has an 11 speed shimano hub running a 10-sp cassette with spacer, but ...

yeah not enough details here...

if there's a spacer and you've got a 10 speed Sram cassette on there, then yes they're 11 speed compatible. if you've got a 10 speed Shimano cassette, then it depends on the width of the spacer.

I could be mistaken, but I'm not sure they ever made any 10 speed Campy R45's. just based on timing and when the groupset and Campy R45 version came out. but someone else can hopefully confirm that.

I will tell you the bad news is 10 speed to 11 speed conversion is $180+ for the parts. it's really easy to do, though you will need a re-dish as well. so hope that you are indeed 11 speed currently...

Shimano. I currently have a 10 speed cassette installed, with the washer. My hope is to remove the 10 speed cassette, remove the washer, install an 11 speed cassette.

I'm thinking now that I need a specific shell to accept the 11 speed cassette.

11 speed Campy uses the same freehub body as 10 and 9 speed Campy.

So, in effect, they did make "10 speed R45's".

OP: sounds like the spacer thickness is what you want to look at now. BdaGhisallo says it should be 1.85mm, so just measure it and you'll have your answer.

The spacer that fits behind a 10sp cassette (supplied by Shimano with the cassette) is 1mm thick. The spacer supplied (usually with the hub) to allow a 10sp cassette to fit on a Shimano 11sp cassette body is 1.85mm.

As has been said, the way to confirm they're 11sp R45 hubs is the differently shaded bands around the cassette body, on top of the splines.

If the spacer you have on the hub is 1mm thick, then you probably don't have the 11sp body.

Yee gads, I miss the days of a box full of 6 or 7s freewheels(126 mm spacing, 120 a 'little' before my time) with little bit different ratios. Screw it on, go ride, any rear Der, and chain...now get off my fooking lawn!!
