View Full Version : UK groupset purchase?

Has anyone taken advantage of the plummeting pound to purchase a group from the UK? And if so, what's the best deal you've seen?

The implied discount on retail purchases transacted in GBP is not that much, relative to the world of retail. Just looking at the range of USD per 1 GBP from pre-Brexit to now is only a discount of around 12%. I.E. From $1.48 to $1.32.

Ribble throws 10-15% off coupon codes off regularly so the currency swing means very little.

In terms of investments of course the currency swing mean quite a bit. But getting cheap components in taking avantage of the currency volatility is overstated.

A different perspective is that my salary just dropped 12%, so no groupsets for me.

I'll stop moaning now.

Last Thursday morning a Shimano 105 groupset in black with 11/32 cassette and compact 50/34 crank was $341. Today it's $320-ish.

So a slight drop, but the price was already pretty low.

Just so. There's never been a better time to buy EPS! (Or so the devil on my right shoulder says.)

Your salary hasn't changed a bit relative to your own domestic purchasing power on British soil denominated in GBP. For now. The declining GBP will ripple through fairly immediately with a rise in yourdomestic interest rate so that will effect you life to varying degrees.

But it remains to be seen how Britain's relative trade position is impacted and that will take a while. Britain sold around half her exports into the EU. Those terms will only have gotten less advantageous with a Brexit. I am sorry your referendum turned out this way.

BTW I priced a new EPS grouppo and the currency savings was about $230 on a 2293GBP purchase. So I'm not convinced yet.

early last week on Ribble, Ultegra 6800 was $530-ish, on Friday it was $515, and now it's $484.

do I need a new groupset for some reason?

I bought a 1x11 Shimano XT group from Merlin on Friday for what turns out to be 15% less than what it costs my LBS from QBP. I would say that if you will be in the market for a group relatively soon, now is the time to buy.

Hmm, so I could get Shimano hydraulic brakes for my warbird or I could get an entire 105 groupset to get my Bianchi back up and running or I could replace my ScRAM on my mtb with SLX/XT for the same $$.

Or I could remember that I need a new furnace...:crap:

I forgot to mention in my earlier post: As in all interrelated markets, the favorable spreads on pricing currently reflect the underlying currency relationships based on inventory of existing stocks.

Or said another way, these values will or should only exist for a short time until Ribble or any other UK vendor has to replenish inventory with their Italian manufacturing source at the new, disadvantageous Euro/GBP exchange rate. So these existing spreads seen today will collapse.

If you are thinking of buying, get while the gettings good.

So, I can blame you when my wife asks about my shiny new hydraulic levers & brakes on the Warbird? :o

Funny headline:

"Americans Will Get Cheap Aston Martins After BREXIT"

"Any fall in the pound is unlikely to make Aston Martins a regular sight in middle-class American neighborhoods. Experts are predicting the pound would fall by no more than 20 percent, wiping a massive $40k off the price of an average Aston Martin... But that would still leave consumers needing to find $160k!"

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/andrewalker/2016/06/21/americans-will-get-cheap-aston-martins-after-brexit-n2181723

I think we've made quite a few historic moments happen in the past few days, here's another:

Britain's downgrade by S&P today was historic - the first time the ratings agency has ever cut a AAA sovereign rating by two notches.

Merlin has Etap groups in stock at a very nice price, but when I go to purchase it and check out, it won't allow me to as it says no shipment to the US. I tried other countries as well, but it's only being allowed to be sold in the UK.

Thoughts on why???

Maybe they have so few that they want to keep them in their country for their citizens? Or, the boxes are so big and bulky that they don't want to ship? Or, they made an agreement with SRAM?

I sent them an email asking why, but have not heard back from them.

This sort of "it could always be worse" is both true and also arrant nonsense. Yes, it's terrible to live in a war-torn country. But it's also terrible to lose one's job, one's savings, one's sense of security.

Looking on Ribble right now, they have the Chorus groupset priced from $797.99!!! I'd end up spending about $50 more between the brake and cassette upgrade, but holy smokes, that's cheap.

Just have to remind myself I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it.
