A buddy wants to sell me his set of Shimano RS80 clincher. Less than 200 miles, with skewers and unknown Schwalbe tires - $350.

These will be used for Clydesdale (200 lbs rider) training rides.

Reviews are mixed, but trending towards B/B- range. What do you all think? Anyone have some 10 speed clinchers they're trying to get rid of?

I have a used one that I bought from a forum pal here. I like them, they are relatively light and great training wheels. I did break a spoke in the rear a few months ago. I weigh 170 pounds.

I think you might be better served with a beefier set of wheels.

They're great wheels, and I rode some for a lot of miles and never had a problem, but I weight like 160, and while they seemed super durable, you're packing enough extra that I'd be concerned. You probably want something a little beefier. You can get some 11-speed wheels and pop a spacer on. There are always good options floating around here, or you can get some of the less expensive Shimano or Fulcrum prebuilts.

Thanks. Alternative wheelset suggestions? Although burliness is important, I don't want to go too heavy since I'll need to keep up with other lighter riders. Hoping to break into sub 200 lbs territory in the next month :-p

Shimano wheels are pretty tough. For the price the only holdup might be that they are stuck in 10 speed land unless you run some funky cassette.

HED Ardennes SL, 200# max weight. Originally 10s, dremelled freehub for 11s. Many miles on the "conversion". Cheaper than your buddy wants for his Shimanos (gotta ship them though, unless you're in Northeast USA). 23mm wide.

I briefly rode a set of the RS81's. I loved the feel of the wheel; comfort and speed wise. But, the wheels had a couple manufacturing issues that couldn't be fixed. I sent them back and picked up a set of Boyd Altamont's (clydesdale build) as a replacement.

The Boyd's are very stiff, and have been bomb-proof so far. Unfortunately, they don't ride nearly as well as the RS81's did. They're also 25mm wide, and I had a lot of trouble running a 23mm tire on them, tons of pinch flats. I now ride Conti GP4000's at 25mm, and everything is good.

I preferred the RS81's, but wanted a wheelset that I didn't have to worry about durability-wise. The Boyd's have worked great so far. ~2,500 miles and I haven't touched them...

If I am buying wheels I want to be able to put an 11 speed cassette on there even if running on 10 speed now. I love a light low spoke count wheel except when one of those 16 spokes on the front wheel breaks. :butt:

I also ride Ultegra hubs/32 hole to Open Pros and some new 6800 hubs to Archetype 23mm wide rims. They get the job done and will last a LONG time.

I weighed anywhere between 185-205 while riding these. I rode them 12,000 miles before I decided that the brake track was finished (and it was)

The hubs were still good, spinning nicely, and I rode them in all weather: snow, sun, rain, mud, everything.

Stien's Ardennes sound like a good deal. In the classifieds, Muffin Man (I think) is selling some Ksyrium SLs, which are a tough wheel. They're lighter than the RS80s, but I think they're probably more durable. Lots of heavier guys have ridden Ksyriums without problems that I know. They're also 10/11 speed compatible, so you're future-proofing, and they're pretty friggin sweet looking.

The Shimano/archetype wheel set posted here seems to fit the bill.

Very nice, economical wheels, but 2000g is excessively heavy

These would be pretty much exactly what you're wanting, but would need to be converted to Shimano for another $100... so probably shoots 'em out of your target price range. Maybe the seller will move on he price, though

Ultegra 6800 $327 rs81 $400+/- at Ribble. Seems like Ribble should have a sale soon.

Thanks, all. I picked up the RS80s based in part on the encouraging comments here.

Regarding beefiness, I'm planning on going easy on these.

I appreciate the wheel offer, Stein. Thought I'd keep things simple by avoiding shipping etc.

Don't have a pic yet, but these decaled wheels and striped Schwalbe tires look straight outta 2008 - loud AF!

I had the Dura-ace version of those wheels for a while and liked them a lot. Only difference between the rs80's and the 7900 c24-CLs was the hub. Same rim and spokes, rs80's got an ultegra level hub.

They were plenty good for my needs. Stiff, light, reliable. I was around 160lbs at the time FWIW.
