View Full Version : Replacement Canyon Aeroad Lower Headset Bearing

My 2012 Canyon Aeroad's headset is completely shot.

It uses a non-sealed lower bearing and the holder has disintegrated. The outer steel holder is still usable and the crown race is maybe usable but I definitely need new bearings.

I've measured it the sizes seemed weird. Canyon's website didn't have enough detail, especially as the current model Aeroad has an entirely different headset. Ended up calling Canyon and they sent me a headset but it's not even close to fitting. The crown race doesn't fit the fork and the (cartridge) bearing is loose in the frame with ~2mm of play. The one they sent was a IS47/33.

Done a ton searching but haven't found anything that I think would fit.

The fork diameter where the crown race sits (a metal piece bonded to the lower part of the steerer) is 34.92mm wide.

The bottom of the head tube where the bearing sits has an internal diameter of 48.31mm.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cane Creek's headset fit finder returns IS47/33 for the lower bearing.

This is what Canyon sent me and it's definitely wrong. Not just the wrong size but entirely different style bearing.

Did you try entering the specs manually? If you don't want to navigate the online dealio, give cane creek a call; they'll get you sorted!

The problem you have is that the headset of your bike was never made by cane creek thats an Acros headset..

And this is the canyon IS47 but i dont think it is what you need...

Back when no one could make heads or tails of all the new headset standards, cane creek kept many of my rides sorted!

Can you just clean it up, blop a good wad of grease in there and use loose ball bearings?

Your picture showing your measurement at the fork crown.....

That metal ring (that you're measuring with your calipers) is a part of what was the cartridge bearing itself. You shouldn't measure as it looks like you are for your bearing ID.

From what it looks like in your picture, you're taking a measurement of what would be pressed into the bearing assembly, if the bearing was assembled.

Good call in that piece, I was wondering what that was, doesnt look like a crown race at all.

Canyon use their own special top secret headset bearings and you have to go direct to them

He needs to measure it the one that is still alive and find it using the measurements and not in a cycling bearing place. Doubt is a special bearing, it must be something that is in some manufacturer catalogs.

Right. The model is the Acros AIX-69 which they don't seem to make anymore.

Hadn't thought of this and it's a great idea.

I would still like to replace the crown race which is notched a little and I can't find one Canyon's insanely unique diameter.

It definitely looks like that but the crown race was pressed onto that metal ring. As far as I know a crown race is never part of a bearing cartridge.

Do you have a recommendation for a generic bearing store?

r2bike in Germany is good, too.

I don't know if they have what you need, but they have good customer service; a couple of people who can communicate in English; very fast shipping to the US; excellent prices. I have bought from them and am 100% satisfied.
