View Full Version : I bought a boring bike

It sucked me in with its sweet super record group and pristine appearance.

And low bid.

I need another bike like I need another hole in my head.

Now I just need to figure out how to sneak it in to the house unnoticed.

I think I can dress it up a bit, and if it rides nice, I may keep it, if not, then the frame can be hung on the wall or sold and the parts put to good use.

Any guesses?

Did anyone bid on the Seven with the S&S couplers? I also don't need anymore bikes, but ended up the 3rd highest bidder. Someone got a great deal for $2500 with S&S and Super Record!

Funny you say that. I have been looking at seven replacement stickers for the bike and trying to decide if they would help or hinder the look.

I'll be posting pics once it gets here and soliciting opinions:)

Swapped out for some speedier shoes, and a more appropriate length of stem.

So now what? Cut that steerer?

Custom ti stem? I would love to at least see a stem angle to match that top tube.

Decals?

I'm curious if you think they would look good, or just keep it a sleeper seven?

I can do that, but I have a feeling I'm going to want one in the 110-120 range. Based on my usual reach measurements)

Maiden voyage is tomorrow so I'll know more then.

This one is 100, and the one it came with was 140!

It looks SOOO much better than the eBay ad, and for the money I spent I don't think I can go wrong here.

Tickdoc, that is beautiful.

Custom ti Seven stems are $500 , and their alu stems are $110.
Both have ugly reversible graphics, imo.
Maybe some stealth -17 stem, like a Zipp Beyond Black, or a Thomson, etc?

The black reflective frame decals AJK mentioned look nice.

Thank you. I'm just blown away by the fact that you can find something like this for sale in this condition, with this group, for not much more than the cost of the group alone. I know the frame goes back a few years, but it is built as a lifer.

Having it clean up nice and ride even better is just pure joy.

I'll see what decal options I have and eventually settle on a stealthy stem.

i think it looks great, and i too would leave it alone without decals.

i know your zeroing in on fit, and the stem will change, but that's the only part that looks out of place there now IMO.

also IMO, i think a silver nitto would pull everything together nicely. i can't personally see buying titanium stems, they are simply too much $$$ for zero benefit over an alloy piece.

I agree. Somewhat. Beautiful nitto, but it will always look different than the rest of the bike, where black allow is mucho more prevalent, cheap, and goes with the rest of the black bits.

Seven makes a beauty of a ti stem but it is only the standard +/- 6 degree.

First ride was a total success, so I have plenty of time to dial in.

Thanks for the suggestion.

First ride success! What a super comfy machine. Had a little rain at the end and I can't think of a better bike for it.

Light, fast, responsive, smooth like buttah, and what a climbing champ. I just might keep it.

The anonymity of a mystery machine was kind of fun on the group ride. Two or three pegged it as a seven, others had to ask. I think it has gone from being kinda boring to just being a sleeper.

looks awesome, definitely leave the decals off, its unmistakably a seven as-is. if its a keeper, i would definitely get a ti stem, there are plenty of better/cheaper options than a seven stem (https://www.sevencycles.com/images/accessories/components/stems.jpg) - backwards facing bolts are a PITA to deal with once actually on a bike and the welded on binder bolts looks kinda crappy compared to a paragon clamp with integrated bolts (http://fireflybicycles.com/store#!/Stem/p/10124821/category=2217525). definitely have the stem finish matched to the frame.

or just ditch the am-classic ti post (stem and post gotta match! aesthetically at least) and de-badge/replace that ritchey stem.

personally i love the look of a ti frame with ti post and stem...and a pewter king headset ;)

regardless of what you do, thats a fine machine for the $ and i hope you enjoy every mile on it.

Dude, you find me a 10-12 degree 110 or 120mm titanium stem and matching seatpost ( for a reasonable i.e. Not astronomical price) and I'll buy it, and I'll buy you dinner too for your troubles.

I like extralite, but they don't have the angles. I like control tech, but they don't either.

I'm thinking just Thomson black for value, quality, longevity, and that I can actually find it.

I also thought of going all enve cockpit to match the wheels, but their stem angle choices are very limited.

I think the Seven dt decals are pretty elegant, actually.
I also don't think decals are only about the brand (anyone who doesn't know that's a Seven w/out them might not know what it is even with them). I just think they break up the scale a bit.

I agree. Somewhat. Beautiful nitto, but it will always look different than the rest of the bike, where black allow is mucho more prevalent, cheap, and goes with the rest of the black bits.

Completely agree. I recently did an experiment with my ti frame, photographing both a Deda Zero100 "Dark Metal" (claimed to be close to ti in color) and black alloy stem, in both sun and shade.
In the shade, the DM stem looks OK, but just off enough off to be irritating; in sun the DM stem just explodes because of the reflections. In both cases, I think the black looks better.

From Seven:
"Available in any length, any angle, and three different stiffnesses."
(As long as you send us $500...)

I'm really wondering about this "rule" now.
In the experiment I mentioned above, the seatpost is ti.
I found that that the ti frame/ti seatpost (the finishes match exactly) with a carbon fork/black stem look quite good. Better than with a silver stem, certainly.

The "complication" I don't have though, and that Tickdoc does, is that his st is carbon.

Having the fork/stem match looks good to me.

That said, I do still lust after a Kish ti stem (he uses Paragon too), with custom rise to match the tt, and a perfectly matched finish.

Dude, you find me a 10-12 degree 110 or 120mm titanium stem and matching seatpost ( for a reasonable i.e. Not astronomical price) and I'll buy it, and I'll buy you dinner too for your troubles.

Same here. I haven't seen any less expensive alternatives (to me) than a Kish at $300.
ControlTech, Ti Cycles, etc. are marginally less expensive, but the logos are laser-etched, and bead-blasting won't remove them. So, unless one really likes their logos, that's a no-go (for me) at $225-$250.
I'm not touching one of those eBay Chinese ti stems. For +/- $100, a Thomson is a much better bet.

Sloping toptube + 6 degree drop/rise looks great (to my eye at least)

Flat top tube and threadless stem is where all the problems arise, imo.

Shouldn't matter, doesn't matter to the function in the least, but the esthetic kill me. That's why old quill stems make me smile ( most of them :-)

I looked long and hard at this auction, especially for the Record 11 group and (if I remember correctly) the compact crankset... but I already have a Seven Axiom with Record 10 sp & standard crankset but couldn't justify the cost.

If you're asking for opinions, I think the stem should match the seat post, so ti would be just right and yes, cut the steerer tube. And, for what it's worth, keep the non-decal look. Anybody who knows Seven will spot this frame right away, but the understated ti look is really attractive. Frankly, I think Seven goes a little bit overboard with their labeling... mine came with labels on seat tube, down tube, stem, forks... it's a little too much.

Anyway, nice score!

I actually like the carbon post and black stem, with the carbon seat tube and stays, and black group. Maybe even more than a ti post/stem.
