He forgot to add Strava to that list, so true on many leverls. It is very hard to ween oneself from a Garmin/Strava/MapMyRide/EtAl when one gets accustomed to using them. It took every bit of will power I had just to keep from recording a ride I did yesterday on a simple bike errand. :help: :o But I did it!

Man, I love this. Did a ride this weekend where we didn't consult the map on the GPS and got a bit further afield than expected. It was glorious.

So if this doesn't make any sense to me, I must be doing something right?

I know a few riders with this mentality. Totally veered of the path of riding for enjoyment.

Really funny--undocumented coffees are excellent.

Lately I have been riding with out my garmin and only take my phone for emergency use.
I am not a facebooker and rarely use my twitter account.
I ride for myself and my own enjoyment. It is my way of clearing all the sh(t out of my head and for my it is also a way to relax.
I am glad I never got into all the social media and electronics of cycling.
I just enjoy the ride.

Good read, thanks for posting
I have been data-less for a few years now and I doubt I ever go back.

I've been saying for a while that a bunch of new cyclists I know would not be riding if it wasn't for Strava. You can say it's a good thing as it gets them on bikes but I've seen such a different vibe on group rides in the past couple of years that it all but ruins many of them.

So good on so many points. While I "record data", I don't use it to obsess over. I've got a simple computer onboard (speed/time/cadence/distance) with my phone in a jersey pocket recording on MMR. What do I do with it from there? Simply keep it logged for purposes of how much time put in the saddle week to week.

I've had a few rides here and there where I never started the onboard computer, so all I had at my disposal was nothing more than a clock for the time of day. It was nice...really nice.

It's the easy sell theory, it works well on idiots who would never question what they're doing. Sadly, that's become most of the cycling population... To be fair, it's not just cyclists, lots of people live their lives following their phones these days.

Strava, Garmin and power meters are all devices that can be used to view yourself in isolation of the rest of the world. Your power numbers are your power numbers, while Strava is designed to track and compare group data, it's function has become to break apart group rides. The end result of all of this is that cyclists no longer have a perspective on how they are doing, there's nothing to compare to other than themselves. Hell, even my sock game is strong if I'm riding alone...

When I ride my bike all I have is a bike computer. I don't even take an iPod with me.

never thought of you as a fashion icon, heh heh. Must admit, I've never recorded ride 'data', and my up to date computer is a Sigma wired (speed, date, average, max)... What's a watt anyway?
