I found out the hard way today that my old schwinn has a JIS headset.

I need to get one of these but the veto orange stack height may be a tad long and the Tange headset has 30.2mm cups not 30.0 and I have read people not getting these to work.

Are there any other options?

I recently installed a tange. It went in tough. I guess I just assumed the cups were the correct size...

There is/was an overseas vendor selling sealed bearing JIS headsets. I don't know anything about them, but how bad could it be? As much as I like a good CK, it doesn't take much to make a usable headset.

Since the headset I had was ISO and he had the cups in which must be 30.2 maybe I just get the Tange.

Is the 30.2 going to cause problems with the headset cup. I have no clue if my head tube is now stretched or the cups are squeezed :)

I didn't have a box so I've got no idea what the cup size actually was. I assumed it was 30mm to match the JIS race. It went in tough, but the headset feels perfectly smooth. Surprisingly smooth.

Yeah the shop guy put the ISO 30.2 cups in mine also and they went in. However, measuring they are for sure big.

Calling all Paceline experts, now that a 30.2 has been installed is the head tube likely stretched so I should just use a 30.2 or get the proper 30.0 and use a bit of lock tight to be safe?

If its in there and runs smooth, leave it.

The cups went in but the lower race does not. I may have answered my own question. I just put the old 30.0 lower cup in and it is no longer snug. The top cup is but the bottom just slides in.

Am I thinking I may ask the shop how much they will charge to mill the head tube to 30.1. That should be pretty easy and then the problem is solved since getting a 30.2 cup /27.0 lower race setup is easy peasy. I could even have them to the lower race and make it an ISO standard. It may be cheaper to just buy another headset than shop hours for the lower race milling though.

Is it possible to use a 27.0mm fork race with the ISO headset I have?

I guess the question is whether the lower bearings are all the same size.
