View Full Version : Hypothetically, if I were to build the Bernardi Max

If I were to pull down my classified add, how would you vote I build this bike?

Standard road - 2x10 campy with downtube shifters
SS road - drop bar and look pedals
SS townie - flat bars and spd (or flat) pedals
Other?

I really have no need for a fourth bike, but the frame is here, it won't sell, and I've got a pretty good spare parts supply.

On hand parts:
King headset
Eurus wheelset
Silver record brakeset
Silver modolo/Sachs drop bar brake levers
10spd Campagnolo downtube shifters
Silver veloce 10spd RD
Silver chorus 10spd FD
Silver centaur ultra-torque crankset
Silver spinachi extensions
Centaur 10 cassette
Centaur 10 chain
Selle italia SLR saddle
Pleanty of cable and housing
140mm 25.4 quill (ideal for flat bars)

Logical convention and the parts list above would lean to a traditional road bike. A traditional road bike would be duplication, but my current skinny tire road bike also has a good deal of sentimental value so it would be a better candidate for taking on vacation or rides with questionable weather.

I do miss having a single speed so another option would be to use the centaur crankset with a single ring and only use a single cog on the rear. It obviously wouldn't be as clean as a dedicated singlespeed, but I bet it looks nice. One benefit of the 130 spacing would be shared wheels. I could swap my powertap wheel on the bike with just a cassette change.

Flat bars and spd isn't as comfortable for a long ride, but this would make it unique to my existing bikes. It would probably also be fun around town. That said, town is pretty small and I often end up walking so I can bring the dog with me.

It really wouldn't take much to change it up, but where does the group reccomend I start? (Realizing the smart option is keeping it for sale)

That deserves a 10 speed group.

Too much of a bike for a townie or a fix gear IMO.

Oh, I've got a pair of King cages too.

The centaur crankset is a standard and I have a nice 12-23 laying around. Seems like a fitting way to build a Max frame.

Plus those wheels and you are all set :)

The pictured fulcrum wheels are gone. I have a pair of very nice condition steel spoked eurus wheels that I think would suit it nicely however. They are stiff, lively, and the rim depth complements the frame nicely.

I'm guessing a cinelli xa and Thomson setback combo would cause some forum heartburn?

Campagnolo seatpost man.

Too short unless you find me an alloy centaur.

I completely agree with this. Max frames really deserves gears.

10spd Campagnolo downtube shifters
Silver Veloce 10spd RD
Silver Chorus 10spd FD
Silver Centaur Ultra-Torque crankset
Centaur 10 cassette
Centaur 10 chain
Selle italia SLR saddle
Silver King cages
Silver-spoked Eurus wheelset

Silver stem, bars and seatpost

Maybe enter the wild and wonderful world of riding a fixie? Just would need a rear hub and install a front brake.

I got a front disc brake I'll donate to the cause. (FWIW, I would go 10 sped all the way with that one, but that is just me...no fixie love here)

It would be return. This is the first year in quite a while that I haven't had a SS/FG conversion. Part of me wants to do a single speed RAGBRAI in the next few years and this seems like it would be a fun way to do it. Some cassette spacers, shifter boss covers, and some short chainring bolts should be all that I need.

I do understand the sentiment that the frame should have gears.

I don't understand the attraction of singlespeed road riding so I'm certainly biased but I'd put gears on that frame all day.

You know my opinion, build it with 10s downtube shifters. I keep searching for the right bits to move my Koga to a downtube bike. The other MAX main triangle bike ready is.

get thumbies and make it a geared flat bar townie

If it gets gears, it will be dt regardless of bar shape.

One of my friends has the right group for this bike, Delta record C, I think the only missing part is the crankset but the deltas and the derailleurs are there.

What's wrong with the 10spd setup I own? :)

Nothing. Nothing at all.

At least, nothing that a full DA7700 group couldn't fix. :D

I do have one of those.. in a box.. it should probably be on a bike instead of in a box..

But indexed Campy downtube are so much better..

At least, nothing that a full DA7700 group couldn't fix. :D

let me remind you:
-silver record differential brakes
-silver ultra torque crankset
-10sdp indexed record downtubes
-silver Sachs branded modolo levers
-silver record skewers

As sweet as 7700 is, it doesn't touch the list above.

Why did I pass up that mint xa stem...

DO you need an 11 partial group for this? :D

We'll have to agree to disagree.

But, in all honesty, that's a pretty nice setup.

That would be awesome.

The brake levers I have are the same style but have silver brake blades.
