Shed a little light for one car I am considering. Just to let you know, I would be doing DSG.

Interested as well. I have a TDI and as most owners I'm waiting for the June 21 announcement on how I can cash in on VW's devious ways. I'm looking at a 2016 GTI 4 door SE with LP and DSG. No need for the PP unless I got a great deal on it and no need for the Autobahn package either. I did see a Limestone Gray R in the showroom though. wow. but realistically beyond my $ means.

DSG works pretty well, but you're paying $450 for a fluid change every 40k miles.

I like mine, 15 SE 4dr manual with lighting package. Quite an upgrade over my 06 Civic Si. A lot better on gas, quieter and more refined all around.

Agree that the DSG doesn't make financial sense considering that it also adds >$1k to the price of the car. but the thought of sitting in traffic with the MT is not for me. Plus the wife may want to drive it and she's not MT trained. Which of course could be considered a benefit ;)

2015 2 door manual.

Pretty good gas mileage even when I drive it like an asshole. 28 in town with a pretty heavy foot. 36 highway driving (really).

I wish I would have held out for the "performance package" just because I want to drive one with the special front diff.

Suspension can be a little rough on ****ty roads. Not Subaru STI rough but noticeable if you spend long hours on bad roads.

The wheels are stupid and too big.

I'd buy one again.

I thought the new GTIs were supposed to have adjustable suspension, as in you could make it softer if you so desired. No?

The Golf R comes with that as an option - not sure about the GTI.

I have an older cousin - a 2006. I would recommend a 4-door.

Mine has 87000 miles and has some rust under the right front quarter panel. It will be repaired under warranty, but it is worth of note. Also, the headliner is separating.

If I do/did it again I'd definitely go for the 4-door. It's been a good car but I want something new now.

Hmm, really?
Just checked the 2015/16 GTIs offered on eBay (current and sold) and it doesn't look that bad.

I have a 2010. Been a great car.

Was kicking around the idea of a new Golf R, but why bother when what I have does all I need and is still a hoot to drive?

If I had to do over again, I would go with the DSG over the manual.

I have a 2015 4d SE manual that I bought in June of 2014. It has about 24k on it. It's been a great car for me so far (knock wood all to hell), fun to drive, great gas mileage, and yes, pretty refined for a $27k car.

Lots of interesting reading here if you have the time.

I just test drove a new GTI and regular Golf. For my style or lack thereof, I actually enjoyed the nicer ride of the Golf. And it went really well too. Then I drove a turbo 1.5 new Civic. It seemed to compete in every way with the Golf and has a lot of “modern” not included in the Golf. Time will tell.

Yeah, but a CVT? And the styling of the new Civic is a little "out there" for me. Those taillights are just too much.

The DSG fluids are $100. Changing them isn't rocket science. I would not get the PP since my 16" snows won't fit.

Don't look at dealer resale prices. Talk to owners who try to sell them private party after owning one. I have owned 22 VWs since I was 24 years old (and a founder of VWvortex), and the newer they are, the less they have been worth. I have taken an absolute bath on my last 2 GTIs and I refuse to do it again. The DieselGate BS didn't help me this time, either.

Look closely at overall resale of VW/Audis before you dive too deep into them. Great cars, but unless you plan to keep it forever, you take a really big hit on a new one.

Also the 2016 has the upgraded audio system and takes regular gas.

That's great to know about the snows. I was just looking at the PP and thought it was a no brainer...but maybe not

That's only an issue if you already have 16" winter tires. With careful shopping, you can likely find 17"ers that fit over the PP brakes. I have 17" OZ's and winters over Golf R brakes.

Well that's also helpful, thanks for that. I love me some OZs

Really? GTI using regular gas? What did they change in the engine?

It's all in the ECU.

As for the snows I guess I wasn't clear. Of course you can get 17" snows. I own a nice set of 16" which will not fit the PP.

this thread and photo when you scroll down would suggest it says 87 is ok right on the fuel door.

I have a 2016 GTI Autobahn 6MT with the performance package. The performance package is worth it for the upgraded brakes.

Very fun car to drive gets good gas mileage. It is fun taking exit ramps at 50+ mph.

The adaptive cruise control and emergency braking works great. I had two knuckleheads decide to get tangled up when going 60MPH down the highway. The emergency braking initiated before I could react.

I also got the lighting package, great set of headlights, the adaptive lighting helps when cornering at night..

The bonus is that I can easily get two bikes in, wheels off with the seats down.

I also use 87 octane.

Several of you GTI owners mention great mileage as one of the car's strengths. So what kind of mileage are you actually seeing?
The teen in me gets excited about a GTI, but given how I drive, the GTI is probably way more vehicle than I'll use, sort of like me bringing a aero TT bike to a group ride.

I get about 35mpg on the highway and about 30mpg at 75 mph.

Mixed driving about 27mpg.

Stupid question - can I use 87 octane in my 15 GTI? My understanding is that it's not recommended as it's only the 16 that has the updated ECU mapped for 87 octance use but want to see what others think.

Any tuner worth his salt should be able with a hand held tuner (SCT) etc. to write a tune to take it down to 87 octane.
