I need a recommendation for a cross bike for my son. He won't be racing - I just want a bike that does well on the road and gravel trails. He's 5'5" and growing.

Anyone have a cost-effective recommendation?

Look for a used Redline. They make a real nice 650c youth cross bike.

Bikes Direct has a big assortment of cross bikes, and the prices are hard to beat. I have a Fantom Cross from a few years ago that's been a pretty good bike for knocking around town. I'm 5'5" and can ride a 52cm frame with 700C wheels.

You can get a new bike at a reasonable price for a young and growing rider.

Look at this web page, scroll down and all the way across to see the full selection:

Any adult cross bike in a 48-50 depending on geometry

Lots of used stuff should start to surface as cross season is coming soon

No need for a kids cross bike if he's that tall

What about just sticking a rigid fork on a mountain bike and swapping tires?

Second the Redline. A clean used 50cm Conquest or Conquest Pro is in the $500-$700 range. When he grows out of it in a year you can sell it for pretty much what you paid for it.

A used Redline is a great suggestion. I was surprised that the Conquest appears to be discontinued - the Redline website shows no cross bikes (as far as I can tell).

Redline ceased production of road bikes last year.
