The author was my mentor, via correspondence, when I was in junior high and in high school. I remember that article well.

Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for the link brings back memories. 1972 was the year I purchased my first real race bike and heard of the name Eddy Merckz, the bike was labeled Coppi.

Wasn't this SI article (thanks for posting it btw) but another SI article on St. Eddy that is to credit/blame for pointy helmets and 80 degree seat angles on bike paths:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironman_Triathlon#history

Among the participants were representatives of both the Mid-Pacific Road Runners and the Waikiki Swim Club, whose members had long been debating which athletes were more fit, runners or swimmers. On this occasion, U.S. Navy Commander John Collins pointed out that a recent article in Sports Illustrated magazine had declared that Eddy Merckx, the great Belgian cyclist, had the highest recorded "oxygen uptake" of any athlete ever measured, so perhaps cyclists were more fit than anyone.
