I really wanted to put a drop bar on my commuter but its just to darn long no matter what stem and bar.

So what would be a flat, swept, riser or any other bar that offered more than one good hand position?

I have been riding the Soma Clarence which I like but it is really just a one position bar.

See if you can dig up an old Scott AT-2, AT-3, or AT-4 handlebar. They were great back in the day. I happily rode with an AT-4 LF for many years, but I've since returned to the straightest of straight, a Nitto B2500AA.

other alternative - get some ergon grips (I like the bio-kork) or use bar ends on a straight bar.

nitto albatross or bosco bar?

albatross is a great call. just depends on straight vs. mustache preference

I use a trekking bar on both my touring and gravel bike specifically for that purpose - bring the reach closer for added comfort and offer multiple hand positions. The look and appearance may not be for everybody but in terms of practicality and accomplishing the stated goal, it wins hands down.

Below are some pictures from the web to illustrate. You can find them as cheap as $10-12 shipped on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/580-25-4mm-Anti-slip-Butterfly-Handlebar-for-Mountain-Bike-Bicycle-Black-JT5J-/351583039229?hash=item51dbfb6efd:g:qnwAAOSwcdBWTU7 W).

Find some decent mustache bars..Nitto makes some nice alloy ones. As an aside, I tried flat bars on my wet weather moots and after one ride, my wrists hurt so much I went back to a drop bar. Tried a SomaFab ARC bar..

So many people dig this Salsa bar:

I have one that came on an MTB I bought secondhand. It did not look suitable on my lightweight carbon XCO bike, but it would be perfect for a commuter. FYI, the bend looks much more drastic in person.

I just can’t get past the looks but the look like the ultimate in versatility.

I like these but on this bike I would have to convert to threadless and really the bike is too long to take advantage of the quality of the bar.

Brake levers like those in OP's picture on mustache bars always look a little odd to me – like they shouldn't be there.
Any other ideas for brake levers that are a little more elegant on that type of bar?

That is what I think too.

Are any of these good for standing when riding hills?
