My friend has a set of Zipp 303's estimated circa 2009 and a set of Firecrest 404s circa 2010-2012. Both Shimano freehub 10 speed. Can these be updated to 11 speed?

It would surprise me if one could "upgrade" the body on the 303s to 11s. The 404 is more likely to be upgradeable. However you can file the body down to fit an 11s cassette on either of those freehubbodies.

An alternative would be to find a campy splined body cause that will fit an 11s campy cassette that will work on your 11s shimano / sram drivetrain.

As Bjorn says, Campag freehub+cassette and a redish and you're good to go:

I recall that thread about shaving down the freehub. Did a quick search but didn't see it. I'm probably not using the right search string.
I think the preference is to keep it Shimano so he can use the 11 speed cassette that is en route but I'll mention the Campy solution too.

I've literally this week updated two sets of 404's to 11 speed in the shop.

Both were 2011/12 and if you can stand paying the money, all you need to do is get your LBS to order the upgrade kit from Zipp (or wheelbuilder.com) and get them to fit it. The kit consists of a new axle, washer, spacer, cassette body and a new end cap. The wheel will obviously need re-dishing as the guys have already pointed out.

Took me about 40mins for each wheel and you're good to go. If you have a basic knowledge of wheel building, you can do this yourself, but be careful with the re-dish.

Your bike shop may want to tell you that the wheels will need to go back to Zipp to ensure their warranty, (and they are correct), but in all honesty, it's not a tricky job to do.

Good luck

The best kit for upgrading Zipps to 11 speed is to cut the hub out and use a better hub. :p

I upgraded my older Zipp 188 hubs to 11s with a kit i bought on ebay. I installed it about a month ago and it's working as advertised. Search the bay for "Aftermarket Shimano 11 Speed Freehub Conversion kit fits Zipp 188 V6 V7 hub"

Yep, that's what I've done for plenty of folks with 10sp Zipps, and Easton too.

I did it with a HED free hub:

Realized I can make use of all this for my Lemond Revolution 10 spd Shimano freehub too. I already bought the Campy freehub for it but I'll still convert the Shimano one to 11.

So zipp hubs suck?

Yes and no. It really comes down to sHram products.

Seriously, just run a Campagnolo cassette.

Out of curiosity, what frame(s) do you use? i've heard that on some frames, the chain may get shifted onto the chainstay

any updates on if your friend was able to do the update

the V6 an V7 of the 188 hub were once designated as 10-speed only when running Shimano compatible cassettes. Has this changed?

Yes - I believe there was an early version or two of the 188 that had a smaller axle OD (by a couple of mm) for which a (Zipp) 11s upgrade kit was never offered.
