Explaining why it is pulling out of cycling, the Memphis, Tennessee, company stated that bicycle products no longer fit into its core strategy, which appears to be increasingly aimed at the golf market. “Expensive manufacturing process upgrades (are) required to address several concerns,” read a statement from Jeremy Erspamer, True Temper’s senior vice-president, who is responsible for their Performance Products division.

This really sucks. True temper S3 is a gem that will be missed. Speed Vagens will get a little less interesting. I imagine they will have to go full Spirit now.

There are plenty of bike tubing makers still out there and 'some' are big enough to dictate tubing dimensions. I wouldn't fret about SW..

Agree, the company most affected by the discontinuation is not Vanilla, but Henry James. They are the exclusive supplier of True Temper tubing!

Not concerned about Vanilla, just always thought the mix of tube sets on their bikes was cool.

I have a pile of S3 waiting to be built up (any day now!). Alas, it will be one of the last...

Mixing different brands of tube sets is not new and many builders do it. Albert Eisentraut, the Godfather of American frame building, did that many years ago. Many other builders including Rivendell for its custom framesets, still do it.

Good Luck!

Don Walker, framebuilder and Director of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, was one of those a bit perplexed and also saddened by the news. “True Temper has been a stalwart in American cycling culture and framebuilding, and I believed that the brand was gaining popularity in recent years with some of the American builders preferring to offer all U.S. sourced parts for their frames. It saddens me that we are losing a company who provided such a quality product to our industry, and especially an American company which, to my knowledge, had solid sales numbers especially in recent years,” said Walker.

There is no doubt that different steel alloys can be easily brazed together. But what about welding - can different alloys be easily mixed when welding?

You would think that you could because isn't the filler rod a different alloy than the tubes being joined?

As long as the right filler rod is used it's typically a non-issue.
