sorry if this thread exists already.

these are the builds that i've done over the past four years or so. i like how cheap you can build them, and how useful they are. however i haven't landed on the perfect one yet. i have had some complaint or another about each frame that has led me to sell all of them. either the sizing is weird (#1 offender), the seatpost is stuck, there's a missing braze on, they're too flexy, etc. every couple months i get the itch again, & end up cruising ebay & craigslist for a new old mountain bike.

please share pictures of yours.

I bought this new in 1994. I couldn't find an AMP Research frame in my size, but one of the local bike shops had a Mongoose Amplifier branded frame. I still ride it occasionally, with my kids on the local trails.

I found this Ross Mt. Rainier on CL several years ago. It's a tank but great fun to ride.

These are all fantastic; favorites are probably 1, 6, +7 above. The drop bars rule, the white Stumpjumper is very cool looking, and the Litespeed definitely reminds of a Raleigh BMX bike I had growing up.

I dragged this out a while back since someone in the Classifieds was looking for an old MTB--this is my original Fisher Acquila circa 1993....

Not used too much...

thanks for the cool replies! there is some fire in here. i mostly buy specializeds because they're cheap and reliable. i might need to branch out.

i recently heard a rumor that mike sinyard asked tom ritchey to design the first stumpjumper and ritchey begrudgingly obliged, only to botch its geometry to thwart its sales. however i know tim neenan is the one who designed the stumpjumper. either way, it does ride like a boat.

That elevated chainstay Yeti is seriously badass.

My not quite, sort of vintage but not 2000 Gunnar Rockhound. Old school sizing and geometry on a Reynolds 853 hardtail. No discs, threads in my bottom bracket, straight 1.125" headtube and someday it will have bar ends, too.

Restoration in progress (https://thatssodoug.wordpress.com/category/cycling/)... freshly sandblasted and awaiting new paint:

I'm putting a 2003 RockShox SID World Cup on my build. Not exactly 100% period correct, but it's the right travel, has canti studs and is stupid light. There are some decent options from Fox and RS for 26" forks with brake posts and short travel (60-80mm) if you scour eBay for a little while.

Dude. That Nuke Proof is uber rare!

So here a question. Do you ride any of the older bikes? I love checking out classic MTBs but resist owning any as I'd never ride them. Disc brakes, suspension (good suspension), tubeless tires and 29" wheels are just so much better than what was available 20 years ago. I don't think I could ever go back to a mid 90's ride and enjoy anything other than screwing around in the driveway.

Depends on what kind of rides your doing......

Up until now the wife has been pulling our 2yr old in a Burley, but now that she's 5 mos pregnant she's wanting me to pull the kid and I'm sure as hell not hooking that burley up to my Lefty or, god forbid my ROAD BIKE.

I'm thinking of creating an "urban assault bike" with some old school MTB style.....flat pedals, bigazz front basket, baby seat, burley trailer......uglier/gnarlier the better

They all get ridden but the terrain around here isn't super aggressive so there isn't to much worry about damaging me or the bike or worrying about performance. One of the few pluses of living in the flatlands. Between mtb and road I have 25 or more bikes to ride and I kind of like the variety! That being said my main rides are the P-29 Ritchey and my Wilier Lavarado road bike.

Disc brakes, suspension (good suspension), tubeless tires and 29" wheels are just so much better than what was available 20 years ago. I don't think I could ever go back to a mid 90's ride and enjoy anything other than screwing around in the driveway."

I took my rigid 1992 MB-3 to Moab 7 years ago and rode Slickrock and some of the moderate trails. You have to pick your lines and use your arms and legs to soak up the bumps but the thumbshifters, cantilever brakes, and smaller tires didn't prove to be much of a disadvantege, I was able to keep up with my friends and had a blast.

1992 Paramount.

Well used fun machine. Love it. What the heck is going on with the rear derailleur?

Yeah that is odd isn't it? Not sure. Could be that the chain had not been oiled in so long it kind of bound up. I rode a minute or two after that pic and it worked though.

My early-90's Inglis with a Girvin fork and 9 spd XTR. It originally had a perfectly fine Marzocchi Bomber when I decided to try the novel Girvin (Noleen). What a difference, so superior to the Bomber for the type of XC riding I do. Later on swapped the triple Ritchey Logic for this later XTR, but think I'll go back to the Ritchey and it's significantly lower Q.

This was one of Curtis' personal frames I bought from him a few years after manufacture.

Hey, thats my first mtb - '88 HKEK. bio-pace. u-brake.
I had a sharkfin, hite-rite, zefal cages, toe clips and a yellow V1-pro

It's still a great bike. I took it out to the woods a few weeks ago and it's still a blast. Just a lot more work than with a modern fork. This has the sharkfin and the original pedals. Shimano may have built the best flat pedal ever for MTB and JRA.

BTW, that's an extremely flattering photo, the old girl is way over due for a trip to the powdercoater's.

I really wasn't expecting performance better than that of the Bomber (a well respected fork at the time), but in addition to the lighter weight and vastly improved stiffness, peddle bob was nearly eliminated and it reacts to much smaller bumps. It did take me about 2-1/2 ebay years to find the yellow "big boy" spring that was a pretty rare upgrade. Also amazing is that pretty much everything is still available to rebuild these things.

Here's another pic in my water rationed front yard.

Mid 90's Diamondback Apex. I bought the frame to train on during the winter and built it with Shimano's first 8 speed XT group. Most of those components wore out and were replaced within a couple years. It now is a true Frankenbike with Suntour, Sram, Avid, and Shimano components.

My wife still has her 1993 Stumpjumper. It's a bit of an oddball with a 1 1/8" quill stem.

My pride and joy for many years was my 1994/5 S-Works Chro-Mo. Many of the parts have been replaced over the years but it still retains most of its feel of the era. I was playing around with anodizing aluminum back then. This thing is 19lbs race-ready.

I love those wheels. I had a set on my M2 Stumpjumper back in the day. Sold the bike to a friend as my shop was going under. I tried to buy it back a few years later just to get the wheels but he'd given it to his brother. I had a 4th or 5th gen set of wheels on it (bearings outboard, full alum sleeve in center, not sure if they made any earlier versions), they were really good to me.

I should take a picture of my mtb at some point. It's newer than the M2 but I got it in the late 90s, probably '98, maybe '99.

I'm planning on moving the parts onto a different frame, for disc brakes. The new frame is longer also, and same head tube length.

I traded a TT bike (me + TT bike = joke) to a promising Junior who got the mountain bike as a gift. It was too big for him and he wanted a TT bike. His parents okayed the transaction.

The mtb still has a blown rivnut, it had two bent rings, a missing spoke in the back wheel, and some other problems. I put on a super long stem, cut the bars down as much as possible, added some bar ends, and put a smaller cassette on. Fork is blown and I've replaced most of the elastomers with plastic spacers. I've only ridden it on the street.

Forgot to add that after I dumped the avocet gel saddle I got a WTB SST.98 (which i still have and sometimes debate on selling (same with some period bar ends (control tech team, OCLV))

yup...the "hand job". The above is a bottle opener. I'm told it's a serious collectors piece. ok, cool. But I like it because it reminds me of a time an place. I got it when I test rode the original castellano "bow-ti"

forgot to add our since replaced Ritchey Skyliner fillet masterpiece in road mode. Nothing says 80s like splatter/fade paint.

That is a mountain cycles cable actuated disc with 1" travel. The bungee cord - thats the way to keep the toe clips up on the NDS for easier entry.

So, what should I do about finding a 1 1/4" quill stem for the vintage fisher that I am about to buy? Tempted to get a super rise shorty stem and put drop bars on it as a SS. I've got the bar, brake levers, etc, but the existing stem is too long for drops.

Damn obsolete standards!

I bought the LSTEM105 from mombat, and never mounted it. I'd sell it for $25 shipped. Paid $39 after shipping.

Just finished building up this Stumpjumper as a single speed commuter and around town cruiser this morning. I think it is a 1990.

I had an early 1990s Rockhopper a few years ago that I regretted selling and have been looking for something similar ever since. Took it for spin to the coffee shop this morning and it rides great. I was doing this build on the cheap just to get it up and running. There are a few small updates I might make down the road - possibly going 1x9 on it. Enjoy and sorry for the bad phone pic!

Also: thanks to member mktng for the Salsa stem and Flite Ti!

Thanks! It's hard to tell in the picture but this frame does have horizontal dropouts. They are pretty short, with not a lot of room for adjustment, but I think I lucked out and the 40x16 gearing gave me just the right amount of chain to tension in the dropouts.

It was madness this morning on my commute. I was riding my old steel Fisher with FAT tires and a cruiser bar and passed a very cool vintage Wicked Fat Chance with the same setup.

However, riding in the opposite direction to me was what appeared to be an as-new Bridgestone MB Zip ridden by an older guy. It was amazing - literally blinding in the sunshine as the light reflected off of it. He seemed a pretty blue collar guy too - not some rich dude. I loved it!

My current "project" is a '93 GT Xizang. I have wanted one since I bought my first mountain bike in '92, and I finally was able to recently acquire one.

It was a bit neglected when I got it, and I promptly tore it all down, refinished the frame in a bright brushed finish, and applied a full set of reproduction decals. Turned out fantastic.

It's going to be built up with mostly contemporary components, wherever possible. Should be light and stealthy, and freak out all of the kids with their 6" travel full suspension 29ers. :)

Wow! That is a beautiful bike! How long did it take you to refinish? Scotchbrite?

Given the year and the distinctive bullet stays, my bet that it was built by Litespeed for GT. I would love to get my hands one of those.

Old MTB's are just plain fun to restore / mod and use for bombers. A number have gone through my hands, with several ending up in Thailand.

I still have a mid 90's Litespeed made (may be an Obed), note the bullet stays, and a mid 90's Titanium Red made out of surplus MIGs. The Red is set up as a bomber SS. The seat is flat, but the rear wheel raised in the photo. I recently sold a 1989 Fisher Procaliber to a guy who actually welded these frames for Fisher.

Yeah, 3M ScotchBride pads (tried both red and green—green was a finer shine), cut into 2" x 10" strips, then "shoeshined" perpendicular to the tubing.

The original Xizang frames from GT were all hand polished, so I started to restore the polished frame. After about an hour of polishing, I realized how useless that was to me for a finish that I didn't even really like. So I went with a finish similar to the old Merlins, which I love.

The whole refinishing process took about 3 hours for me over a few evenings in the shop, maybe a little longer.

Here's what it looked like before I started on refinishing it...

Beautiful Serotta, Kunk. I'm a big fan of that frame and was looking for one when the Xizang fell into my lap. Nice build, too.

I'm really diggin' your 853 steel Indy, Corso. Beautiful color and a really nice overall look. Bet it rides like a dream.

My Indy is my all time favorite bike. I’ve replaced the rockshox-seatpost with a steel zoom, and I’ve not missed is at all, comfort-wise. I thought the steel Zoom would be “rough”, but it adds to the overall “steel is real” feel.

Stock color two fade repaint after I crashed it hard and dented a chainstay. IF said it was good to ride, but for small money they cut the rear end out, put in a new rear triangle and painted a new rigid fork to match for ~$400. Should I?

A pal is offering an excellent deal on a Fat City Cycles Wicked. Mix of XTR, Suntour, Syncros, etc. A few bare spots showing surface rust but solid condition overall It fits and would serve as a cruiser, kid hauler, beach bike, commuter, etc. Would be perfect with some wider bars and RTPs.

The hangup is I have a mind to pick up a modern cross country mountain bike, but am having second thoughts since this one is cool and a tiny fraction of the price of a new xc bike.

Opinions please.

Take out the seatpost and shine a light down the seat tube. My lean is to run away from any Fat or vintage steel with any rust on it, but you need to look inside to see for sure.

Wide bars? Why? I know, all the kids are doing it, but it still makes no sense to me.

I would, only if it's a smokin' deal. And by smokin', I mean under $100. It's not a factory paint job, no factory decals and surface rust you're looking at a frame with not a ton of resale value. As a beater, it's awesome, though. If it were me, I'd find some Salsa drop bars and convert it to SS. :) Keep it low budget and theft-proof.

Good advice wrt inspection. SS is a neat idea...

Riding the old narrow bars just feels weird to me....thinking of a Soma Clarence (http://store.somafab.com/soclbarbl.html) bar , a nice contrast to my 100% drop bar situation.

Yup, that's the one. I messaged Rick after I saw the listing and picked it up after having some concerns met. It turned out he built two of them, back when my favorite local bike mechanic was helping him fabricate.

Love this thread! All the bikes I own so far are more or less vintage. All of them are mountain bikes..
I'll start with my most fun and probably also most rare bike possession:
a '98 Wilderness Trail Bikes Phoenix Single Speed.
Between 1993 and 1998 Steve Potts built around 600 Phoenix frames - mostly steel, ~100 titanium. The 19,5" size was only offered in the last production year
and is rare in itself - let alone the single speed configuration.
While the frame looks and actually is massive, the handling is fantastic...

Ordered drop bars for it the other day. Looking very much forward to the cockpit modification. Will post an update once accomplished.

I'm hoping it's as sweet as it looks and if so it will be in my garage tomorrow. Has a custom Igleheart fork and stem (stem never installed), CK hubs and headset, etc. along with a Keith Anderson paint job. It will be a fun addition to my 29er. Stan, great collection. What's up with the stem on the Otis Guy? It looks like a threadless stem on a threaded steerer.

Stan Lee
06-03-2017, 12:35 AM
Thanks! The Otis stem clamps onto a stub brazed into the top of the fork steerer that extends above the top of the threaded headset. Ritchey, Ibis, Potts, and Cunningham used this method as well in the early 80's but the deminsions and shapes varied. The Ibis with the LD above is another example. The design is pretty old and intended to shave weight (I assume).

Wow, a man after my own heart. I've moved on to modern bikes, but I still desire to own an old Dekerf or Brodie - so nice!

When I was a penniless student, I once had the chance to buy Paul Brodie's personal Sovereign hardtail frame that he customized with "disc brake mounts"!! I was weirded out by the mounts and stalled then it sold at a local consignment sports store (pre-Ebay/Craigslist)

So stupid of me!

Here is a good photo of how it works. The Potts on the previous page uses the same system as well.

Thank you for the explanation, and I thought I had seen it all.

The bikes in the collection represent a marvelous period of innovation by a lot of local--to many of us across the country--and then-young builders.
