A friend's son just sent these pics to him and says he picked up this Serotta CX at a Brooklyn bike rally for $600.

Description from seller is allegedly:

Carbon top and down tubes, titanium everything else, this bike is a gravel/cx machine. Easton EC90 SLX tubulars are as light as it gets, (rear wheel alone sells for $950) and ready to rip! Sram RED cranks and shifters (sram's top end dura ace equivalent) paired with Force front derailleur and Rival rear derailleur with TRP canti brake calipers. Weighing in at just 15 pounds.

That would make it an Ottrott cross . . . not many of those made if I recall correctly. Ottrott frame, Easton tubies, SRAM Red, TRP cantis. . . for $600?!? It's gotta be hot.

Huh, I had a table at the Jumble maybe 40 feet away from the seller and was eyeing that beauty all day. The seller seemed legit, but he was asking $2k for the complete and $1200 for the frameset IIRC.

He didn't seem like the one to basically give it away but stranger things have happened.

If it was stolen then I'd say based on the description and the price that it's a knowledgeable thief. A druggie thief would have sold that for $75.

This was my bike...it hadn't been ridden in multiple years, unfortunately...

I had a friend of mine who runs a shop take some of my stuff to the swap to unload it.

Sometimes cash in the hand is better than a bike that doesn't get to see the outside.

He also paid quite a bit more that $600...not sure why that was said.

I've been guilty of telling my wife "Oh, how much did I pay for that bike? I only paid $500!" when the actual sum is a magnitude or two larger than that. Maybe that's what the buyer told his dad.

So we've now gone from questioning the ethics of the seller (possibly selling a stolen bike) to questioning the ethics of the buyer (he lied about the price, whatever his motivations). This sure is a fickle place :)

^This sounds about right. The question now is what BumbleBeeDave should tell his friend...

Hey Dad, I got this bike at a swap meet for $600 to use on campus and I didn't use the tuition money you sent, cough, cough.

I always tell my wife when I die not to sell my stuff for how much I say I paid.

Wild, I'm 99% sure I saw that bike being ridden south on Park Av last night at 7pm. I got a really ****ty photo of the rider passing by (I was out shooting cyclists) if we want to do Zapruder-style analysis.

Absolutely nothing. The cat already is out of the bag, however, as the sale price already is publicly discussed here. I don't imagine the father will remain in the dark for long.
