According to Campagnolo, you cannot mix and match 2015 Chorus 11 (marked with an A in a box) shifters and derailleurs with earlier 11 speed Chorus. I know that the rear derailleurs look radically different, but why exactly can't one use a new Chorus rear derailleur with an earlier shifter? I've got a customer who tried it, and is seeing hesitation when shifting into his four smallest cogs (new cables & housing made no difference).

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Tom

Different cable pull ratio - it just simply will not work.

Side note, the fronts work.

If your customer has any shimano road derailluers lying around, he/she can buy an adapter called the Grow-tac Equal pulley. This item allows you to use a campagnolo shifter with a shimano rear derailleur by changing the cable pull of the ergopwer to match that of the shimano derailluer.

That's interesting. I've never heard of a Grow-tac Equal pulley?! How much do they cost?

Usually, when people want to use Campy shifters with a shimano rear der or visa versa, the standard thing to get is a Jtek Shiftmate:

Of course, if he's running 11 speed, things are so close that a shimano rear der might work with the campy shifter....Good Luck!

They are about $42 shipped. The cool thing about this setup is that shimano rear derailleurs are much cheaper than Campagnolo so if you are racing and damaging rear derailleurs, you won't cry about getting a new 6800 rear mech for $50 vs. $220 for a chorus. I love the campagnolo hoods, especially the new 2015 version, so this is a win win, if you are not concerened about having a full matching groupo.

Why do you want to buy the grow tac when you can get a jtek pulley?? Unless you have a grow-tac available right there you know. And you dont have to open the lever eventhought install the grow-tac is super easy, only one bolt to lose and tight.

The Jtek is a nice option too. I like the growtac since it is internal and protected from the elements.

Most likely the best option.

Yeah is a really clever solution but the j-tek is really resilient, probably you can do a P-R with snow and the pulley will continue working perfectly.

I ran 11 brifters and RD with a 10 cassette using a j-tek, never a single problem.

FWIW

I have a circa 2012 Chorus 11 group.... rear derailleur got trashed and was replaced with the newer 2015 version.
That setup works fine.

Are 2015 hoods really a different shape?

No, different bumpies and such on them is about all.

I haven't had the bikes around to try this. Use a 2015 rear der on older 11 ERGO to 'see'. Looking at the takeup spools, they sure look similar.

Middle is 2014 SR/Record, right is 2015 SR/Record(left is 2010 10s UltraShift).
