Looking for handlebars to put on my fathers old Mercian I am building up as an all-day comfortable road bike.

Any experience with Cinelli Giro D'Italia 64's, particularly with Campagnolo Ergos? The newer ones are in easy 26.0, and have a shorter reach than the very long Nitto Noodles.

Considering putting the terrific Soma Highway Ones on, but feel the classic build would vibe better with Cinelli or Nitto.

Thanks!

I've not used the current incarnation of the Giro d'Italia bar, but have the older version on a number of my vintage bikes. If the bend of the new one is the same as the old (the image suggests it is), I suspect you might be disappointed. One area where the ergonomics of newer bars are better is the ramp area (between the top and the brake hoods). The ramp is pretty small on the Giro d'Italia, and when set up as original (with the drops more-or-less parallel to the ground), they take a quick dive down to the hoods. Not horizontal at all. Here's an example. (I don't know that particular bike is sporting a Giro d'Italia bar, but I think most Cinelli and 3TTT bars from that period have similar bends, differing only in detail, not overall style.)

I had a pair of the new 64's fastened to my Della last year with Ergos mounted. No problem getting the levers set up properly. They mounted straight and the drop to the hoods was not a bother. There is a much larger drop to the hoods with standard brake levers mounted as in the picture above. Sorry I don't have a pic available as the Della is no longer in my possession.

I have used Cinelli 64 for a long time, moving along from quill stem to threadless in using Deda Shallow bar, which is the same bend as the 64s. They work fine with Campagnolo Ergo as long as you mount the levers low as indeed they should be mounted. Any Ergo lever mounted high means the rider doesn't use the drops, or at least cannot work the mouse ears while in the drops if possessing a normal human thumb.

Dunno if mounting the Ergo lever in the proper way satisfies your intention for "all day comfortable" for this build.

Deda speciale 26 bars are cheap and a great compromise between a giro bar and hwy1. I am envious of my wife's setup:

Good point. I should have been explicit in my earlier response when I referred to "vintage bikes." I was implicitly saying "no brifters". I have no bikes worth mentioning with more than six cogs in back, all my shifters mount on the downtube, and none of them click.

Not the Cinelli Giros, but I did use a similar bar, the Deda Speciale, on the Della Santa. Works great with modern ergos. I'm never a big fan of that flat deck transition that seems to be in vogue. Much prefer the slight "notch" that used to be how levers were mounted.

But yeah, no issues and the levers work great on a classic bend bar.

I have tried both the giro reissue and the deda bar and 10sps era ergos mate to the deda bar noticeably higher. It appears the 11spd era ergos may mate to the giro bars a little better.

I'm with flash by the way. I've got flat transitions on two of my three bikes. I prefer the more classic suble ramp.

Thanks for the info! That Bruce Gordon looks sooo right.

I find myself spending most of my time in distinct spots on the bars, with little small movements. I am either on the hoods, the tops, or at one spot in the drops only on descents. Likely, I'll try out the Cinellis, I'm not sure I'll miss the flats behind the hoods, but we'll never know until I try, and who doesn't like a little experimentation?

I have Cinelli 64's on all of my quill bikes, and agree with fuzzalow's assessment.

I mount in this position on vintage 64's.
