View Full Version : OT: what new bands rock??

The dinos of Rock thread got me thinking. The classics are cool and all, even today, and "classic rock" is still what plays on the old Sony boom box in my garage, but what's the current state of rock? Who going to be playing the Super Bowl half time show in 35 years?? I've lost track of new music, I used to drive a ton and play lots of music in the car, but I've moved away from that. Who's barely legal and rocking your playlist?

I am still stuck in the 80's.

Not exactly new, but I like Whiskeytown (e.g., Stranger's Almanac) for a kind of rocking alt.country sound. Ryan Adams continues to cut it up pretty good with good songs on the edgy side. Of course, I'm still happy listening to the Allman Bros, Jimi, the Byrds, etc., etc., so what do I know.........?

I guess if the yardstick is 80s or older rock, my list is sorta new (but really 10-20 years old)

Brand New
Thrice
Dustin Kensrue (lead singer for thrice)
Jack White

All have been around a while, but they are all evolving and making new stuff. Thrice has an amazing live sound. Brand New does an unbelivible show that usually sells out in minutes.

Wax on Radio did one album 10 years ago (goodness, I am getting old) but it is spectacular. These guys were in their teens and twenties.

I spent an afternoon listening to the radio. My god, the radio has gotten worse than it was when I was 15.

Lately, my morning rides have been spent listening to:

Caspian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCbDtgbWZAs)
Pelican (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xck7KdRXdaU)
Wussy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0jNr6_sS8Y)
Titus Andronicus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08fqHr_KGPY)
Screaming Females (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm1-bVYio1k)
Eastern Youth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13lWmHY-nLA)
Wugazi (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA9F6FF64315A175A)

Caspian has a new album out but they're not new.
Pelican is all about imagining how to kill Orcs on horseback.
Wussy is really new to me but they've been around for a while.
Titus Andronicus is Bright Eyes mixed with east coast garage.
Screaming Females does the best cover of Taylor Swift E V E R.
Eastern Youth: I don't know what they're saying but I like it.
Wugazi: Came out in 2013 or so. Fugazi and Wu Tang Clan mashed up. This is what happens when Bernie has sex with Lil Kim and produces an album.

Also not remotely recent (2002) but Converge's Jane Doe is an extraordinary album. Not everyone's style but it definitely is worth a listen. Probably not with the young ones around though. It's my rollers workout music.

Gleemer is pretty good for people who like Jesus and Mary Chain and other shoegaze but also appreciate "rock" guitar fills.

Mogwai continue to make really cool mostly instrumental music many albums in.

Envy is a rather intense Japanese band. I wish I understood their lyrics because I like every other aspect of their style and they were incredible live.

Lightning Bolt is probably the highest energy band I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live. Just a drummer/vocalist and a bassist.

Of course, I'm still happy listening to the Allman Bros, Jimi, the Byrds, etc., etc., so what do I know.........?

Whiskeytown is not only not new, but hasn't been together for 15 years!

Ryan Adams is great! His just-released remastered Heartbreaker "CD" has some great out-takes. Cold Roses is an absolute classic album that has been likened to the Dead's American Beauty (and some of the songs have been played live by the Dead and Phil & Friends).

If you like Ryan Adam's alt-country stuff, give a listen to Dave Rawlings Machine. Dave played on Heartbreaker and co-wrote "To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)" and "Touch, Feel and Lose." The other key member of DRM is Gillian Welch, who is Dave Rawling's partner. The two play and tour alternately as Gillian Welch or DRM. They are a must see if you get the chance, and they are among the best singer-songwriters performing today.

The other alt-country/Americana performer that is deservedly huge right now is Jason Isbell, who apparent is very close with Adams.

If you like Ryan's stuff with the Cardinals, the guitarist was Neil Casal, who now is in the Hardworking Americans and the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, both of which are great jam bands.

Another you might like is Luther Dickinson, and his band the North Mississippi Allstars. Lesser known of that same ilk is Anders Osbourne, who frequently plays with the NMA.

Finally, not really new, but Isbell's old band the Drive-by Truckers, which is a smart and literate guitar-driven southern rock band led by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, two very good song-writers. Patterson has been called the Bruce Springsteen of the South.

if you like female alt.country performers, Lucinda Willams is the undisputed queen, but there are some great new artists out there. I love Nikki Lane and Margo Price is really good, but a little more twangy.

I'm sitting here wearing my Sweathearts of the Rodeo T-shirt listening to Ryan Adams & the Cardinals. This is still my favorite Ryan Adams tune: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VmGEZDAgtHQ

Also if you happened to had frequented all the crappy North Jersey clubs like Aldo's, Pipeline, The Loop and Tequila Joes you really should listen to the WFMU show The Glen Jones Radio Show Featuring X-ray Burns on 91.5 Sunday afternoon 1-3. Don't bother with the podcast it never seems to work and it only has the music they play which is only about .005% of the show. Most of it is them telling ridiculous stories about growing up in Kearny NJ and the crazy stuff they got into.

Thanks for starting this Nick, as I ask the same question to anyone I come across who appears to have a handle on/interest in the subject. So far I've been mostly underwhelmed with the responses. Townshend wrote "Long Live Rock" (Rock is Dead My Friends) some 45 (!!!!!!!) years ago, but there were always new bands coming up that were interesting, even revelatory to me until about 15 years ago, when the pickings started to get pretty slim. I love some of Mogwai's stuff, but they were new in the mid 1990s. Ryan Adams, the White Stripes, and Queens of the Stone Age are in the same category. The Black Keys are probably my favorite band to surface post 2000. That's still a long time time ago. Last week I bought 40 cds of (mostly) unknown to me artists. I haven't heard them all yet, but so far nothing worth mentioning among them. I remain hopeful that there's something going on, somewhere.

The new Sturgill Simpson album is really good. It's definitely heavier on the country than on the alt. Margo Price too. I also like Elizabeth Cook and Hayes Carll. I spend far too much money on iTunes and Music!

I'm a big Haye's Carll fan.

Jason Isbell has been one of my favorites since his days in DBT. He writes some incredibly poignant songs. Dress Blues became really important after we lost a nephew at the battle of Tal Afar. It's now being covered by Zac Brown, he changed the lyric to be less political (no longer "somebody's Hollywood War"). We last saw Isbell on Memorial Day and he played it. There wasn't a dry in the venue.

Elephant, and Children of Children have stunning lyrics, and my favorites from his DBT days are Outfit and Decoration Day.

I mentioned Elizabeth Cook above. Cook and Isbell recently performed two Townes Van Zandt classics on David Letterman that now are available to purchase on iTunes. These are really good!

Not any particular band, but, here's a suggestion. I just took the plunge six months ago and signed up for Spotify. It has been an awesome medium for finding "new" music. There are playlists, of course, but, if I am listening to other sources of music, like, college radio on the internet, or just read about some band, like, well, in this thread, I just go to Spotify on my phone/IPad/PC and plug in the band name and go to town. It's like having a massive record store in the cloud for ten bucks a month. And the app remembers what you have listened to for future reference.
I am seriously considering finally putting all of my CDs in storage, and maybe soon I'll clear the hundreds of gigs of music off my Mac, although that's not happening tomorrow. Crazy new world we live in. Sure glad I'm not a musician, trying to survive financially, but it sure is easy listening to music these days.

The Arcs which in Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys new project. Much more sonic than the Black Keys but not as riffy.

That tour with That Dog was horrible. They were unhappy and the Haden sisters taunted the young fans that came out to hear Boxcar. The LA Times trashed the tour and the new record the night before they played down here and Blake was clearly bugged.

I'm on a pretty steady diet of WFUV--lots of stuff that I'm not wild about, but the mix is pretty good (though as you say, repetitive at times). I hit a point where I thought I would gouge my eyes out if I heard any more 'classic rock'...

I think there is a boom going on in pop music--not necessarily rock, but all the young bands leaning towards alt-country/slightly precious like Mumford and Sons and the rest. Some of it is pretty good. You can get a sense of this stuff by watching 'Inside Llewyn Davis'--which was the concert film with the bands featured in the film (and some others...).

I liked the breakout song by Gary Clark Jr.--took me back to my R&B loving self, and there are a few more things like that that tickle my ear drums. I like the Black Keys as well--someone on here says 'riff driven'--but isn't that what R&R is all about?

I'll take a listen ot John Richards's show...

I struggled with this during early parenting years -- hard to get out to clubs etc. one thing that has helped me branch back in is the "All songs considered" podcast. It's pretty eclectic, the commentary is generally entertaining. It occasionally veers towards the psychedelic pop, but not too often. For awhile, Carrie brownstein was a regular guest -- pretty hilarious. They extensively cover emerging acts at CMJ and SXSW. It's helped me reconstruct the club list, and flag the things to add to Spotify etc. I wouldn't say you'd cover more "classic rock" sounds but you definitely get quite a few of the things mentioned above...

Check out "El Camino" from 2011 and their most recent (2014) "Turn Blue"

Linkin Park - not new but still a great Live performing band
add to that
the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl can really rock out (saw their last tour a few months ago here in LA)
newer and back together with a new lineup: Breaking Benjamin

The All Songs Considered podcast was my very first thought while reading the OP. It has been my go-to source for new music inspirations for over 10 years.

I also support the comments along the lines of "it doesn't have to be new, just new to you."

Along that line of thought:
1. If you haven't listened to Jack White (in any of his many incarnations), then you must. His music has been in our top 5 for many years.

2. Earlier today I was treated to a friend's ~2-hour compilation of "new" Prince music - tracks (live and otherwise) that have surfaced since his death. Truly amazing. Now admittedly, my wife and I are long-time fans (the convener of a national gathering I attended just this Monday, who is also a close friend, noted to the audience that I was once again wearing my purple shirt in tribute, as I have done extensively since his death), but today's session blew even us away. I strongly suggest you search that out.

3. Eminem may be "new" to you...another long-time favorite here.

Lots of good stuff already mentioned, but here are a few more:

Cold War Kids
Broken Bells
The Twilight Singers (older, but maybe new to some?)
Bloc Party

Some ladies who I think rock:
Meg Myers
Grace Potter
Halsey (more pop, but catchy)

Wow. This is a great thread. I've got some catching up to do.
I'll just throw in the last two albums I bought that made me wish my stereo went to 11...
Death from above 1979- the physical world
Polvo- Siberia

The last great rock show I went to was Sleater Kinney, for their new tour.

Also, I second (or third) Wussy. Really digging that recently.

I just realized all of these bands are new iterations of old. *sigh* I've got some catching up to do.

Distinctly 80s sound, and not necessarily rocking, but Future Islands is worth a look for folks who like that sort of thing:

On the jam band/alt.country/Americana spectrum, the Hardworking Americans new release "Rest in Chaos" came out last week and is excellent. If your not familiar, this is a "supergroup" fronted by alt.folk singer/songwriter Todd Snider, with musicians from a number of well-known jam bands. It's definitely worth a listen.
