I recently rented "Inspired to Ride" because of a thread on this board. What a great documentary on cycling--truly did "inspire me to ride". Thanks to whoever posted that trailer.

Got me thinking. There's a lot of wisdom here. What are your favorite cycling movies/documentaries?

That was a great documentary. Another good one that you can watch online is Cheetah: The Nelson Vails Story (https://vimeo.com/101547499). ESPN's Slaying the Badger was also enjoyable.

Wired to Win.

Not necessarily about cycling.
Shame they couldn't come to whatever agreement to release on DVD.

I absolutely loved this. Saw it several times. The shots were spectacular.

I have never seen it but I heard Pee Wees Big Adventure made some cycling movie list.

Mine is Breaking Away.
Or that old Budweiser Light commercial from 1981 or so.

Man in 1984 when freestyle was just getting off the ground this commercial came on the Live Aid concert that my older brother was recording.

I must have watched it 50 times on the VCR.

The Jørgen Leth films, Stars and Watercarriers and A Sunday in Hell are by far my personal favorites. La Course en Tête is great also.

Finally, there's a video documenting Chris Boardman's Hour Record that is a good view as well, but it's got a different feel to it.

It's about the year Wiggo won the Tour. Not a classic, but well done, and if you like Wiggo (I do) it's an interesting glimpse of him.

The Jørgen Leth films, Stars and Watercarriers and A Sunday in Hell are by far my personal favorites.

There was a time before VHS tapes when art house theaters would show these two films as a double feature. That was the only way to see them.

What is a VHS tape? An art house theater? A double feature? These are subjects for another thread.

I watched "A Survey of Open spaces" last night -- A good documentary of three people riding their bikes self supported from Brownsville Texas through Alaska. That was fun.

When my Dad, whose name is Dave, used to train locally my Mom would go find him and make sure he had food and water and no problems. I'd be riding shotgun and roll down the window and say "up dave, up....up dave"

Got to go with "Tread".

Watching this takes away any of the stress/pressure of those roadie group rides and brings out the fun of riding.

A link to this film was posted on the CR list last week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRt1gZqg5ag. I had wanted to see it for a long time, and was not disappointed.

It really brings us into the very lively cycling club culture of the time, before working people in northern England could afford cars. Cycling was a way to escape on weekends into quiet country lanes away from the dismal factories and crowded homes.

Honor Blackman is appealing and spirited as the star, 15 years before she became a Bond girl. A young Diana Dors and Anthony Newley are in the film too.

It's probably the only film I'll ever see where internal cable routing is important to the plot. :)

A Short, if you an find it:

‘L’ecole des factures’, by Jacques Tati. Sort of Charlie Chaplin on a bike, sometimes packaged with ‘Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday ‘ . Both obscure, funny, and charming.

Warning: Canadian content...

An old inspiration for us when there was almost nothing about cycling to be found--a Canadian National Film Board documentary shot in Quebec--of the 11th St-Laurent long-distance bicycle race held in Quebec in the summer of 1965

Rudimentary film-making--but interesting as a historical artifact:

Definitely the most enjoyable documentary I ever saw.

I really should re-watch les Triplettes but man, all I remember was falling asleep in the theatre when I watched it the first time and thinking why I did I pay to watch this :P

A boy, a girl, and a bike. Shows some amazing bikes from the 1940's.
With Anthony Newley in his yout.

Storyline
When a local cycle club, invite a couple of new members to join them, little do the club realise, that they will soon be involved in a couple of illegal bookmakers putting the squeeze on the son of one of the Members, a stolen bike, a deserting soldier on the run from the police, and a love triangle, that's bound to lead to trouble. During the late 40's and the early 50's, there seem to be hundreds of these clubs. This film shows a fascinating look at a North Country mill town, with a refreshing absence of traffic jams, yellow lines , traffic wardens, and other things we have become accustomed to seeing on our roads today.

Maybe hard to find now, but "All for One", a feel good movie about Team Orica Scott, Greenedge,Mitchelton as they are known today. Similar to their Backstage Pass videos.
I can't believe that I was able to convince my wife to go to the theater. She really enjoyed it. There weren't very many people there, but 90% were women.

Parpaillon ("up and down") by Luc Moullet. Also french, also weird, also delightful. And i'm pretty sure its a documentary of a paceline group ride.

Eat, Race, Win is a pretty good series on Amazon prime. It follows Team Orica Scott at the 2017 Tour de France. It focuses on the chef and crew preparing meals for the team and how they try to source local food.

i agree, i enjoyed that mini series. it was an interesting look into not only the food aspect but some other behind the scenes logistics and downtime of the teams and staff on a grand tour.

Agreed. My wife and I went to see it at the local theatre. A pleasant surprise was that most of the people in the theatre were female. Matt Hayman's emotional
P-R win is definitely a nice side to our sport.
