I have CX1 with a 11-32 cassette. It's not quite enough to do steep climbs, or rather, it is, but I would prefer smaller gears. How big a cassette can I fit? i think the official FOrce cassettes go up to 36, but what if I got one of their MTB cassettes that goes to 40?? if worst comes to worst, i'll just get the 11-36 and be done. there's a certain point where no matter how much gearing you have, it's too steep to ride a bike up it.

if anybody wants to trade for their 11-36 force cassette for my 11-32, i'd be interested.

assuming you are 1x, you can definitely do 36t in the rear.
i have not personally tried larger but i would not be surprised if a 40t worked as well.
if you want to try 40t, do not bother with the overpriced/overengineered sram xd crap, just get a 11-40t m8000 cassette.

Agreed. Though I do doubt a 40 will work without a road link or something similar. Prove me wrong, Adam!

Also I don't have an 11-36 to trade but if your other cassette is a PG 1130 11-32 with low miles I may want to buy it. I finally wore mine out and it's been starting to skip.

BOOM!
the cx1 rd is basically just a medium cage mtb rd, so i cant see why it WOULDNT be able to do that.

how tight is the chain in the 42?
do you think you could swap to a 40t front ring and still get away with it?

I've got CX1 on a bike at the moment with an 11-36 SRAM cassette. I dry-fitted a Shimano 11-42 cassette and everything seemed to work just-fine.

Tempted to do this since the 36 looks ridiculously large on a road bike. I'll be in SF on Thursday if you wanna meet up.

OK great info!!!! It's great to hear the 42 will work. I will probably just buy the m8000 11-42 cassette.

Let us know how it works! I was thinking med cage. I have the long cage Rival 1 RD shifting a 11-42 XT 8000 cassette and can confirm that it works great.

If you have an issue check out the dropout extender thing that wolf tooth sells

i am proud of myself for getting this to work even if this isn't the final set up.

it works great, but does the derailer look too strained? i got a wolftooth road link in the mail. i am afraid that i'll need a new longer chain after installing it though.

here is someone else's photo of the long cage one. it looks pretty similar. maybe I have the long cage one? maybe all I need is a slightly longer chain? both are 11-42 cassettes

Mine is set up with the std (short?) Force CX RD with a 42T rear, 38T front and looks similar but maybe just a tad little less RD stretch.

As you mentioned, I think we both could have left a few more links on the chain for less stretch.

Nevertheless works smooth, quiet and nice to have for steep encounters.... and these days everything seems steep to me :o

That derailleur looks fine although you could try it with one extra link and see. The chain is too long when the derailleur can't pull it tight in the smallest cog.

Why would you install a wolftooth? It's not needed in your setup.

i'm not going to install it. it works good as is. might try 1 more link though.
