If you're looking for cheap, have you considered Shimano HG50 7-speed cassettes? You can get them for around twelve bucks, roughly twenty-two for the HG70 7-speeds. Ten bucks for a Shimano 7-speed hyperglide chain.

No, not 1991 prices, those are 2006 prices. I looked this stuff up last week. I'm planning on putting a drive train exactly like that onto a Kogswell P/R sometime soon, and friction shifting it.

I've been asking myself ever since why it is that a 10-speed cassette should be worth between four and five times the price of a 7-speed - and all I can think of is, that's what the market will bear.

I use Veloce or Centuar cassettes to save a few, only a few bucks. The American Classic is cheaper but does not seem to work as well. IRD has a Campy compatible cassette but I haven't tried one yet. I don't think anybody imports the Campy compatible Miche cassette yet. Sorry that I didn't help much, the best doesn't come cheap ;)

Bill,

QBP imports Miche cassettes. I'm using one right now. Seems to work well so far, but I only have about 100 miles on it so saying that isn't worth much.

Just do a Google search for "Expanded Special Order Catalog" and you'll find all the shops that order from QBP. This place seems to have really good prices: http://aebike.com. $48 for a Campy splined 10-speed (12-25 Cassette (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=FW1552) ).

I use a Miche, they work OK, not great but OK. You can order them in any combo you want from 11 to 28.

How about a Shimano 10 or (any day now) Sram 10 cassette, Shimano chain, and a Jtek Shiftmate? I'm running a 9 speed Sram cassette and chain on an otherwise Campy 10 drivetrain with a Shiftmate and it works great.

Cheers.

Sure, if you have a Shimano compatible wheel...

Campy 10 speed derailleur etc and Shimano 10 cassette works without the Shiftmate, better with.
