I'm interested in picking up some rad wheels from Wiggle that are just over the import duty threshold of $800.

What are the chances I have to pay import duty on this order? Very high? It looks like the import duty is 10% which isn't too bad but does bump the price up somewhat.

You'll still get dinged on "free shipping" they always find a way to add money.

Look up the tarriff codes. If you get hit with a fee, call the shipping company and argue. Bike parts should be exempt.

Meh... $837.90 is too much for a 1426-gram narrow (20.5mm width) wheelset, even factoring in the Campy and carbon sexiness. You can do better than that.

Maybe they could ship one wheel at a time? Would that work?

Haha, thanks but I'm specifically interested in trying the braking surface. But I can wait until some Mavic Exalith wheels come around or something. Not going to risk the import duty.

Isn't there also an admin fee that the shipper ads for their kindness in pre-paying the duty on your behalf?

With the $800 exemption, I wonder if you pay duty on the entire value or only the amount over $800. If it's the latter, it's probably no big deal. Wiggle uses DHL a lot and they are very on top of the duty charges (at least in billing them to you, not necessarily the accuracy of the charges).

there sure is. I reckon you would end up paying around $100 extra on an $850-ish purchase if shipped via DHL.

Or have them sent to someone in the UK who would then send them to you one at a time. (you'd most probably spend more on shipping)

You guys have it way to good. Here we would pay 33% on top of value + shipping costs. Pff.

Insist on having pkg shipped via USPS once it's stateside. Problem solved. The duty and fees shouldn't be that much, even if gigged. If the shipper says the item cost is under $800 and shipping takes it over $800, you're set.

You only have one shot to figure it on this site before you have to sign up.

ask wiggle to sell each wheel as a separate transaction and delivery.

Terrible idea. Then you pay VAT (20% more or so).

This is wrong. The US does not have any trade agreements with the UK so none of their products are exempt. Many bike parts are duty free, but not all. Wheels are 10%.

Even if you get dinged, that's still a great deal. Fantastic pair of wheels, and I love mine.

Aha VAT - not something we deal with here. :(
