Helicoil repair for quill stem clamp?

Found the perfect size black quill stem on eBay (3ttt Record 84), but someone before had used a bolt that was too short and damaged the lower threads. I used a longer bolt that took advantage of the upper threads, but apparently I was only getting a few because it stripped on me. Does anyone know if the Helicoil type kit would work to repair it? I hate for the stem to go to waste.

My concern is that the drill bit and tap for the Helicoil might be too large for the unthreaded portion where the bolt normally slides through...

The drill for a heli-coil is not much bigger than the threads so it's worth a trial seeing how the drill fits in the existing hole. OTOH a stem failure can cause such a catastrophic crash that I think I would junk this one.

Me too. Helicoil ok for non stress areas but, IMHO, if it gave way, dentist or urologist time.

Darn. Ok. You're both right. $30 vs a potential $5000 and fake teeth (or worse.)
Seller just offered my money back, so no harm done.

What's scary is I rode two rides (pretty hard rides) with it before it stripped. The only reason I found out was because the bars slid down a touch and I was going to adjust a re-tighten. I'd say that's some guardian angel stuff!
