Ugh, sad. Bummed I never got to see him

A couple years ago he did a tour of small clubs. He played a 1000 person room in Seattle, but at $200 a head I couldn't quite bring myself to pull the trigger. Wish I would have.

My home town homie, what a hell of a talent. My brother used to see him around Central High with his letterman's jacket that had "Prince" on the back. In the 80's I worked with Frank deMedio, he would often fly his Cessna out to Chanhassen to work on the Paisley Park studio install. And what's with his words on Saturday?

I loved the stories about his entourage following him over to the Seventh Street Entry side of First Avenue and he'd stick his head in to see the Replacements or Husker Du and then turn around and go back and the audience would shrink by half.

One of my first Brave New 2.0 World moments was at Coachella standing behind two 13-year-old girls during Prince's set. They were the two most enthusiastic audience members within 100 feet of me. But their enthusiasm would skyrocket every few seconds while they took selfies. They probably took at least 200; it was nearly a 3 hour set. Kidz, yo.

I am huge Prince fan- especially of his guitar work, which was stellar, emotional, melodic, soaring, thematic, etc...that said, his solo in that song left me flat. Seems like he improvised it and the song calls for working out some parts ahead of time in order to build on the song's great chord progression...

Every time Purple Rain is on I watch it. I've probably seen it 20 times...great guitar work in that film.

That was pretty good. Prince channelling Clapton's solo and bringing it up to date with his own frantic energy. Even if Eric were to reprise his solo from then to now during the time of that RRHoF performance, he couldn't have done that. Intense.

For the guitar buffs, I'd add that it would have been a nice touch if Prince had played that solo on a Rosewood Telecaster. And in so doing, keeping one of George's trademarks as part of the performance.

It's all in the interpretation, so there's no wrong opinion but I'd usually describe Prince's guitar solo work as manic. But you may know his solos better than I do as I don't know any of Prince's solos note-for-note.

Those adjectives you use above on Prince are those I would use to describe David Gilmour's guitar work. A lotta Gilmour's solos I know and can play note for note. All good nonetheless.

Damn. This brings a tear to my eye. One of the finest R&B artists of all time. For a metal head at the time that Purple Rain came out, that album received a surprising amount of play on both my car and home stereos. The Beautiful Ones was my favorite from the album. So soulful and intense. I still get chills when I hear it.

I had a chance to see him at a small local club at SXSW a few years back and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. His Super Bowl halftime performance hasn't been equaled.

The world was a better place with Prince in it...

Prince playing his Hohner was kind of cool. He's had that axe (or a bunch of copies, they don't make that one anymore) since the early 80s, as seen on the inside cover art for 1999:

http://www.minilps.net/images/stories/shop_image/product/1999%20inner%201%201.JPG

My experience with the Rosewood tele, both MIJ and original from the era was meh. Harrison gave his to Jackie Lomax, he never played it. They are exhausting stage instruments too, the one I played weighed more than a Norlin Paul I had. Once at a gig, my strap end unclipped and the LP dented the stage. Guitar was fine.

When Prince first emerged, I was into guitar heroes and he didn't show that side much initially. And I was frankly a little freaked out by his androgyny at the time. But his guitar chops showed up pretty quickly and I got to really like him by Purple Rain. And over time I grew out of my own hang-ups (people like him helped with that) started to appreciate his whole act. There's a really distinct Prince "sound" that I like but don't love, but he was so intensely prolific that there are tons of songs that sound almost like a totally different genre that are just wonderful.

Sad day, bad year for this type of thing. And the guy was just about a year older than me, so a particularly clear reminder of my own mortality too.

Does anybody care to speculate on how he died? I was talking to someone today and he just blurted out something to the effect that Prince was a health wreck, popping opiates like candy at one or more points in his life. I guess if that's true then he sorta set up a timeline for when his body would ultimately say enough.

This is the best video I've seen of it - high def with cameras at various angles and some really nice close-ups. And a MUCH better view of Nils ripping out that amazing guitar solo, which may be the best part of this tribute. Amazing how a great musician can take a great song written for a totally different genre and make it sound both like his own and yet true to the original.

Prince has a different image for different people in the general public but to me it's always been about his guitar playing which is generally underrated only because he's more thought of as a pop star.

Check this one out. Prince doing Billy Cobham's Stratus. One of the greatest fusion instrumentals out there and everyone likes to put own their spin on it. What a way to start off a show!

there's been a flood of music that's hit online since his passing.

for years, he's been among the most prolific in keeping stuff off youtube, etc.

will be interesting to see how that all plays out, i.e., if estate continues that strategy to protect the content.

this is the best rendition of purple rain i've ever heard online. any doubters as to his musicality can watch this and recalibrate. boy that would've been a good show live.

Wow. I never saw him live - I wish I had. That's some insane guitar playing (and singing).

I've been thinking a lot about him as a guitarist and I don't think he was really an innovator, in the sense of changing the language, but in terms of mastering the language that existed and playing it beautifully, articulately, artistically, he was amazing, about as good as anyone. Guys like Hendrix, Richards, Les Paul, Robert Johnson, Django Reinhart, etc, came up with entirely different approaches to the instrument - played it in ways it had never been played before and completely expanded the possibilities for everyone who came after. I don't see Prince that way, but given the vocabulary that existed when he arrived, he squeezed every bit of possibility out of it.

Those two performances, of Stratus and Purple Rain are incredible examples of what a great player he was...
