Has anybody successfully used Shimano's 11/32 cassette with Shimano 6800 or similar regular RD? I know they specify pairing it with the 6800 GS, just want to know if it's possible. I'm not going to lose 10 lbs between now and next weekend and I'm looking for a crutch to help me haul my fat arse up and down some steep and long grades and don't really want to buy the GS for occasional use in this type of situation. I could probably get by with a 30 tooth large gear if there was another compatible 11 sp cassette. A 12/30 might be ideal.

Another option would be to use a 10 speed 12/30 ( I have one already) and lock out one click. Anybody successfully pulled that off?

Depends a bit on your specific frame/der hanger geometry, but I think you should be able to get it to work OK for a specific ride. You'll likely have to crank the B-tension screw all the way in, or even try the backwards B-screw trick. (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/deakins/images/bscrewonbackwards2.JPG)

You sure your chain will be long enough?

I'm running 11/32 with a 50/34 in front, shifted by a DA9000 short cage. Also have 6870 SS Di2 mech shifting the same combo.

My experience is 11/32 will be fine with a short cage mech. Hanger and chainstay dimension can throw a wrench in the machine, but it is not that often.

Make the chain too short, which rotates the top pulley out of the way of bigger cogs, it'll work great BUT you won't have enough chain for big-big and if ya try to go there, kablooey.

I use the IRD 11-36 cassette with a RD6800 GS. Works great. No compromise upgrade...

I've used as large as 34t with short cage Dura Ace by changing the upper pulley to a 10t. With a 32t I've never yet seen a clearance issue using stock 11t pulleys.

I've run a 11/32 with 34/46 and a reg/short 6800 der. (mechanical)
Have also done the same with a reg. cage Di2 rear.

The most extreme pairing I've done is a SRAM 11/36, Shimano 6800 34/46 but this was with the longer cage 6800 RD. Also had the b-screw in almost all the way for it to work.
In all cases with proper chain length had full use of all gears.

I have a friend (UN: Saffs) who has his bike currently setup with a 32t rear and 50/36 up front. Short cage 9000 rd. He says it works.

Thanks for all the reply's, I guess it should be no problem. I'll order the cassette tomorrow, sure beats a starvation diet.
