I ran across these pictures of the Passo dello Stelvio and this looks amazing. Has this ever been ridden as part of the TdF or Giro?

(more info and pictures here (http://www.ulb.ac.be/di/ssd/ldoyen/e/stelvio.html))

Found the answer to my own question. This was raced in the Giro in '05 as well as in '94 -- sounds like a beast of a climb! It is the highest road in Italy

According to VeloNews, for the stage in the '05 Giro, it had 48 hairpins and 25km of climbing. This is the stage were Basso lost 48 minutes last year -- which was certainly the wrong stage to have a bad day.

Thanks Keith, a nice distraction from a hectic morning.

I occasionally go back to Owens site to read of his trips. Those stories and I am sure others have some just as good, would make a great -touring- geared magazine.

It was the day that Basso was sick and finished 42' behind the leaders. Pretty amazing looking 'hill' !

Climb on!!

It is a brute. I did it in June one year and I thought I saw a mirage of people skiing at the top--it was not a mirage. The road has markers for how many K's to go. Near the top the sign said 1K or something, yet the top looked 10K away! I nearly lost it. Fortunately, you turn a corenr and the road seems to split thru the mountain and the top was indeed only 1K away. It is one long climb.

It is one long climb. But I would expect, very satisfying to be standing on the top looking down after your ascent up the mountain.

Keith,

I Spoke to Steve yesterday and you will be seeing a lot of mountain tops with incredible views. Maybe not of the alpine type, but of the Pacific ocean type.

Stelvio Webcam (http://webcam.popso.it/stelvio.php?PASSOEST)

The Stelvio (Ger. "Stilfserjoch") is right "next" to the Gavia, on the other side of Bormio.

Three years ago, while in Italy for business, I made a special trip there. Sans bike, alas. There is a gorgeous thermal bath at the base. The road was still closed to traffic in mid-May. There was nothing preventing you from walking or riding up, but presumably the road was not cleared of snow at the top. I'll go back some day.

That had to be a very satisfying accomplishment and to be able to look back upon where you came. OMG!! My hat's off to 93!!!

Hey Chief, you should read this guy's trip report (http://www.torelli.com/travel/dolomiti/stelvio.shtml) of doing this climb when you have a minute to spare. Very enjoyable read that includes some of the history of this pass and it gives you a good feel what the climb is like.

Check out the Scanuppia from the http://ciclismo.sitiasp.it website. It is rated the most difficult ascent with a gain of 1317m in 7.5km and averaging 17.6% with sections over 28%. I think I would have a hard time walking up that one.
