It's apparently possible as shown here:

Anyone ever done it? How hard? I'm mainly interested in going to 11s by taking apart an 11s bar end. I know you can mount the bar end on the DT, but the lever shape just isn't perfect.

I'd also like more informstion on how they did this. I've replaced the innards on a 6208 down tube shifter with the guts from a 7850 bar end, so 6 speed to 10 speed with a friction option, but can't figure out how to remove the indexing mechanism in the 7900 down tube shifters or 11 speed bar ends, which are a different design.

Ira Ryan is the one that did that conversion if I remember correctly..

I just finished building up my Gunnar (thanks DHallerman!) with a couple "impossible" Shimano 11s hacks.

#1: 11s 7900 downtube shifters (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=185686)
#2: 11s 7700 rear hub (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=185754)

Neither was overly difficult, though not straightforward either. The shifter required some dremel work to extend the throw range to account for the extra click in the BSR1 indexing unit. The hub required finding a compatible FHB and RH cone/locknut and juggling some spacers. I'll write up the process for each in the next day or three.

Can't wait to see your write up! I have a great set of wheels with 7700 hubs that I would love to work with my DA 9000 bike.

Thanks,
Greg

Nice Gunnar! I'm looking forward to seeing how to do the downtube shifter modification. Ira Ryan's Breadwinner looks sweet - I read about him doing the 11 speed thing, but wasn't clear what all is involved.
