Think there's any saving this? Damn FMBs are too expensive and too hard to get to trash one after 400 miles. on the FRONT, no less.

Bumping because I have the same issue w/ a Challenge Almanzo

Freesole or shoe goo.

Vulcanization process failure. Interesting.

Glue it back together? how long will last? Unknown because the rubber is vulcanized and shouldnt do what it did.

shoe goo.

That's exactly what came to my mind too (and one can understand why).

Had a corsa cx do the same after a brief stint on wet and muddy gravel.

Good luck, those fmb's are a lot harder to find.

I'm just going to say FMB road tires are for one day classics for the pro's and bike porn pictures...

Every set Iv'e had has worn through the tread in like 5-6 rides.. The tread wears when you look at them to the wrong way. I went to Veloflex and haven't looked back. The Veloflex roubaix tire is comparable and way more durable..

Send it to tiredoctor in FL. He's repaired my FMB tires for me in the past...

That happens sometimes with FMBs. As others recommended. Repairable but you're better off getting a new tire.

Fun..

maybe I'll just slap some Mastik under there.

Barge cement.

Mastik? Why use Mastik, when you can use duct tape instead?

Sorry about your tire. Yes, +1 on the Shoe Goo.

Nobody's commented on the little diamond shaped brake wear patterns at every spoke. I've never seen anything like that before (but I live a very sheltered life).

What kind of rim is that, and how many miles are on it?

Maybe I'm jinxing myself but my FMB P-Rs have held up really well despite being off-road a lot.

I've never had a FMB cross tire do that, challenge yeah all the time but not FMB.

2 ways to 'glue' on tread, 'hot' and 'cold' vulcanization. Hot, what Veloflex, Vittoria and most others use, is essentially a chemical process that bonds the tread to casing. Dugast and FMB, use 'cold', that is, they just glue the tread to the casing using glue. I've seen this with more than a few FMB and Dugast, including cross tubies..Way to expensive for this type of thing. I sometimes wonder about the allure.

Veloflex are cold processed as well. Because of other processes/stitching type, casing shape etc. it's sometimes harder to tell, but in general a vulcanized tire will be flat in cross section when deflated while a cold processed tire will still retain its round shape. A cold processed tire basically has its tread glued onto the casing by hand while the casing is inflated...A vulcanized tire has its tread fixed to the casing with high heat and pressure.

Mavic Gel280, probably about 1000 miles. That wear pattern is pretty normal for these old, soft, unmachined rims.. this rim in particular. It looked like that after about 300 miles... probably slightly accelerated by riding them in the rain and on gravel. Spoke tension is enough to cause a very slight bulge in the rim, and the soft anodize gives pretty quick. But you can't feel it while braking.

Hey... FYI - Barge Cement worked. As far as I can tell, anyway. Did 8000' of climbing and hard descending yesterday on this tire, and tread is still firmly glued down.

So at least that's no longer an issue. Unfortunately, I blew up two other FMBs between then and now... one got a sidewall cut that didn't blow out for a couple days (and I'd forgotten about - thank God it happened at the bottom of the huge descent I'd just finished... jeez), and the other.... oh man. So angry. The other was a tire I'd carefully ripped off a wheel I rebuilt... went to inflate it to slap some glue on it, and POP.... tube must have been twisted up inside it or something. Don't know. ****ing bull****.

So tired of spending extra time and extra money on stuff that fails faster. Think I'm gonna go back to Vittorias.

Hard to beat Vittoria Corsa Elite.

I have been using FMB's for several years now. I have had that experience with only one tire, and used Gorilla glue. It was not pretty, but it did hold the tire together until it wore out. I find the tires last just about as long as the Veloflex carbon tires, but they feel more supple and are easier to mount. And I agree that at this level of quality tire, it should not happen.

Not to threadjack but I had this happen with a Vittoria Corsa CX, not just in spots but around the entire tire. Shop said they'd warranty it but then was like "oh wait just to check you didn't use it on a trainer did you?" I had. They said you can't use an open tubular (or any other tubular) on a trainer because the heat will debond the tread from the carcass.

Is that right?

Yea, man.... trainers destroy tires
