What about that reflector hop and tire gank?? Seems really exaggerated! Like sneezing and blowing over a building

Pretty darn good tuck and roll by the guy in the floro helmet but then to get body checked in the end just sucked! Ugh. Hope everyone was ok!

I'm impressed with orange-helmet guy managing to get perpendicular but poor green helmet guy on the Felt. He takes that endo like a champ but gets runover twice.

Looks like he panicked and locked up the rear brake...

Crazy nobody was really hurt. The poor bloke in the green helmet (3rd wheel pre-crash) gets body-slammed hard right before the slo-mo ends!

Rear wheel hit the bott dot,
hopped,
landed sideways, and rolled the tubular off the rim

tire jammed between frame, locked up rear wheel,

skid sideways

It was actually a pedal strike

DOOD - good eye indeed! You're right, and that explains the crazy hop that a reflector shouldn't have caused

Dead Man
04-14-2016, 02:55 PM
Having suffered a similar pedal strike that put me down at 25mph once upon a time, I'm kinda surprised I didn't catch that myself

But everyone has been maintaining it was the reflector, so I guess I just took it as granted.

From Canadian Cycling Magazine....

Coming into the final right-hand corner of the elite men’s 90-minute crit, Silber were well positioned at the front of the peloton. Castillo entered the corner first with Dahl glued to his wheel. As the designated sprinter for Silber, Doyle was perfectly positioned. However the race plan unraveled when Dahl clipped a pedal in the corner and his rear-wheel lost traction bringing the Silber rider down. Travis McCabe (Holowesko-Citadel) went head-over-handlebars running into a tumbling Dahl.

The last guy to go down (:47-48, just at the end of the slo-mo) follows classic crash advice -- look for a body to land on....

Nope, hit one f these little reflector things in the road. NOPE, pedal strike?

the part where floro helmet guy is airborne, bike 45° to the road, still clipped in and tucked to ride is quite impressive.

right before he splays out like a frog mid jump.

Almost looks like the pedal struck the reflector in the road. Reflector would be ~1cm higher than the pavement, seems like others at similar lean angles don't have strike issues...Perfect timing for pedal to nail the reflector??

A few spectators have umbrellas out.....

True, and weird... but the road is dry and he obviously had a pedal strike, which sent him sideways and ripped his tire off. So I don't think water played any part at all.

Dead Man
04-18-2016, 03:59 PM
He's definitely got a lot less pedal clearance than his competitors, coming into the turn, and they're all hitting it at the same angle of attack... so he's obviously either got more BB drop or wider pedals than everyone else. Maybe both. Looks like flouro guy, for instance, has enough clearance to have missed the reflector, even if he'd had the same ride over it.

It's pretty crazy how little margin for error there is on pedaling through corners, though. Just depends on way too much stuff - angle of attack coming into the curve, whether or not you make any course corrections mid-lean (like maybe seeing the reflector and trying to miss it, causing the lean to be a little deeper than intended?), etc... I've pedaled through some turns I definitely shouldn't have made it through, yet have also had unexpected strikes - worst was when I unexpectedly had to make a course correction and leaned harder than intended - popped me up just like this guy... but early in the turn, so I just went down and slid for like 20'... bad week for wearing pants.

I'm curious what was being said when this crash happened. The slow-mo makes it sound like someone was screaming, "Nooooooo," the entire way through. Hope those folks are better! Kudos to the guy who managed not to endo and jump over everyone
