View Full Version : Does anyone make fat bike wheels for a chariot?

I tow the chariot behind my fat bike. I have ski attachments to replace the wheels, but in the spring some of the snowmobile trail is melted off. The fat bike does fine in the mud. But the 2in wide chariot wheels sank deep in the mud and slowed the train.

Anybody know a wheelsmith that builds chariot fat bike wheels?

I'm also interested to see how this is done. I have a burley trailer and the wheels are nothing special. Would love a fatter tire combo especially for hauling dogs.

You need to post some photos of this setup! It sounds awesome.

I looked into this a while ago. Here are the problems. First, no one makes 20" fat tires. An option might be to move to 24". But that brings up the next problem. It raises the COG making the trailer tippy, even for a double.

You can find 20x2.3 or 2.5 tires that should fit. I think that's about the best you can do.

Vee Tire Co. Mission Command Fat Bike Tire: 20" x 4"

No sure how 4in wide tires will ride on a 27mm wide rims.

All the rims I found are 32 hole. The bike trailer hub is 24 spokes.

If I can find a wheelbuilder willing to drill the rim for 24 spokes

Wow, good find. I see the Speedster as well, which I would prefer.

There is good clearance on the trailer, but enough for a 4" tire? Don't know.

Rims: In the past, Velocity could do custom drillings. But the widest 20" rim I see on there is a 25mm inner width.

Interested to see what you come up with. My Chariot is an older version with no suspension, so would be great if I'm able to get some fatties on there.

EDIT: Ok, here is a fat rim. 42mm. Only 36h, though.

And "20 Plus" tire:

Seems like you'd need to dish the wheels funny or something too to keep them rubbing..

How are the chariot hubs set up?

I have a burley.. to do this (it's interesting) you'd need to probably rebuild the wheels using the burley hubs.. the burley hubs have an axle that extends out of them that slots into a receiver on the trailer.

If you were going to go to this effort I think the interesting thing might be to upsize the rim diameter while you were at it to try and get better tire compatibility... for off road it would probably be pretty beneficial if you can make it work.. not having ever built a wheel I have no idea if either the Burley or chariot hubs could be used that way.

Sounds like the ideal here is an off center dished, 36h 26" fat rim on the stock Burley 24h hub. You can do mismatched holes, skip every third hole?

My Burley has wheel wells that would hit a bigger than 20" wheel. Maybe I'll sand them off. Lot of material.

The Specialized Riprock comes with 20 x ~2.8" tires (Specialized Big Roller, 60TPI, wire bead, 20x2.8") on a sufficiently wide rim, but it is 28 hole. I suppose you could lace them offset with a 14, 8 pattern? Is that even possible?

Always you can swap the rims for wider ones?

4 in tires will be 1.125 wider, so the wider tires should clear the frame.
