View Full Version : The most tossed around bike here?

Just curious what bike holds the record for the most paceliner owned bike?

Anyone know a bike that has stayed within the group more than three times? Four times? More than that?

Post your experiences if you have bought and sold a frame or bike that was owned by another, esp if you know it came from another pl'er.

I was the second Paceline owner of the steel Pacenti that saab2000 has (posted up for sale) now. Still have a little regret letting it go, but can't justify bringing it back into the current mix.
So three owners there, hopefully a fourth soon.

I sold a litespeed vortex to ari, who passed it on to someone, who then had another forum member move it..

I know that I'm at least the 4th forum member who has been the caretaker of a harlequin painted legend.

Dang!

I think it would be cool if each time one is sold it is signed with that forum members handle in some obscure spot.

Just a thought.

So cool that so many bikes have passed through members hands like that.

Each is unique (even the non-serottas :-). And with bikes being so size specific I just find that amazing.

Bunch of bike whores.

Yeah, the copper Kirk (#66) has had three or four owners, as has the red and white Terraplane (#43). I owned both of them prior to getting the infamous polka-dot Terraplane (now the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright/Mondrian Terraplane).

Both were amazing bikes, and quickly convinced me to get "one of my own."

I think it's pretty cool that we do this.

Seems like there's a lesson in here somewhere -- are we searching for our own holy grail bike refusing to accept that absent a glaring fit problem or a serious flaw in construction all of these bikes are just fine and its really not about the bike?

I'm as guilty as the next. I've sold a Kirk (that I regret selling), Calfee Tetra Pro, Landshark, Ridley, Yeti, etc. Almost all of these would qualify as great bikes. Still, everyday I go down to the bike room and can pick between a Spectrum, Kirk and Pegoretti for the road or Cielo 29er for trails, yet I see listings for C40s and Pinarello Dogmas and I'm quickly set to scheming - hmmm, how many parts do I already have to hang on that frame? And those spare wheels are just hanging there .... (yeah wheels are the current addiction that has replaced accumulating frames). A sickness I say ....

I was thinking along those lines as I read through this: Is it the bike, or is it the rider? I haven't bought a frame or complete bike through the forum (not that I haven't tried), I've found more things through other sources that fit me. Speaking of which, Paceliners tend to be giants!

I bought the Terraplane from a guy in North Carolina, not sure if he got it from Frank. I sold it to a guy in Colorado (I think), and it has had a few owners since.

My Waterford RST-22 was owned by at least three other people on the forum before I bought it. In fact, it changed hands at least three times within a few months of the time I got it. I didn't move quickly enough the first two times it was posted for sale but jumped on it immediately the third time. I don't foresee ever selling this bike because the frame fits me perfectly and it is the nicest riding bike I've ever owned. In fact, I am planning to send it to Waterford for a factory refinish as a retirement gift to myself.

My Hampsten Crema has been around. I think I am number five if you include hampco. Finished it last summer in an attempt to thin the herd down to a single road bike (although my Seven Axiom and CAAD9 frames still are hanging in the basement).

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r574/jbf99/jbf.jpg

I purchased the frame from wooly, who based on this photo was running some monster tires on this thing!

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r574/jbf99/wooly.jpg

As near as I can tell, wooly purchased the Crema from radsmd who purchased with best intentions but never got around to building her up.

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r574/jbf99/radsmd.jpg

I believe radsmd picked it up from cycling.james who appears to have built it up properly.

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r574/jbf99/cycling.jame.jpg

As far as I can tell, cycling james picked it up from hampco in one of Steve's "garage sales". Hampco had it built up primarily for display and I believe it was at NAHBS several years ago. OK, thats my story. If anyone wants to chime in and correct any errors, feel free.

I once owned, for a very short time, a DK Terraplane (Maroon with off-white lugs) that was owned by D. Thompson and several others here before it got to me, supposedly Terraplane #2. It's pictured somewhere here, I think. I removed it from the loop, selling it finally on Ebay to a non-Forum member. I took a bath on that one. For reasons I won't go into, it was a total abortion.

Ha, I was the first owner. That particular RST-22 was a GREAT bike. I conceived it in 2001 with Mike Kone's help and it incorporated much of the thinking that informs today's crop of allroad / gravelgrinders, and it rode really well. Though some bikes might get passed around because they are inherent turds, this one is a gem, and I had sold it out of necessity, alas. I saw it last on eBay...going somewhere out into the void beyond paceline. that 953 frame just never connected with me. I prefer my XcR respo over the 953 IF. Whats interesting to me is between those two, you prefer the opposite!

It ended up in Burlington, Vermont at a small time dealer, who had it on eBay. He sold it locally to some guy who built it up as a townie. For a while, I was interested in it, and if it was cheap enough, I still might think about rescuing it from its current owner.

At least it was a few years back when shipping was cheaper. Two way shipping for a frame is verging on $100 these days, depending on locations.
