after I invested 14 bucks in a wristwatch at the walgreens, now I don't even wear it when I ride...twice this week (wednesday and today), I left the house with a bunch of gels or bars, go out and ride...drink when I'm thirsty, eat when I'm hungry, pee when I have to, go home when I get tired. Both times I get home and see its been a 5 hour ride. But with no watch, no computer, none of that junk, the whole ride just flows...in the zone, as fstrthnu would say.

get rid of the junk. just ride.

Yep, you got it. Keep it simple and it's back to basics. Nothing wrong with that.

I took my computer off my serotta. It was too damn pretty to be cluttered up with that POS....I could use a mileage counter...old skool. But that is about all. I really don't care that much about MPH...though I know instinctively and from riding in the past with a mph meter how fast I go. Give me less technology and more time to ride.

Hi, My name is William, and I used to be addicted to my bike computer. I used to go into DT's if I didn't record in my log book on a daily basis: mileage, top speed, avg speed, work out type, progressions, leg shaving times, and ride impressions.

I unhooked the computer when I put a new fork on the Skunkbird last year. I haven't hooked it back up yet. I know mileage from previous years on the different routes I travel. Speed? Who cares. There aren't any hills around here that are going to put me close to 60 mph so eh. I train hard when it's time to train,. I ride to ride when I want to ride. I really like the no computer thang.

William

Everybody! Time to un-hook....

I'm free -- I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality!
I'm free -- I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
If I told you what it takes
To reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say "Nothing's that simple."
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!
I'm free -- I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
I'm free -- I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.

I put a piece of black electrical tape over the top half of my computer's display. I can't see current speed or the evil little arrow. All I know is total distance (which I both enjoy knowing, and need to know for cue sheets).

Best thing I ever did to my bikes (other than low gears & fat tires!)...

I have a HRM/computer deal on the bike and I start it up when I go and stop it when I get back but most of the time it's displaying elapsed riding time and distance. I load it up on the computer when it gets full but I don't inspect each and every ride.

I went back to the doctor
To get another shrink.
I have to tell him about my weekend,
But he never betrays what he thinks.

Can you see the real me doctor?

I went back to my mother
I said, "I'm crazy ma, help me."
She said, "I know how it feels son,
'Cos it runs in the family."

Can you see the real me, mother?

The cracks between the paving stones
Look like rivers of flowing veins.
Strange people who know me
Peeping from behind every window pane.
The girl I used to love
Lives in this yellow house.
Yesterday she passed me by,
She doesn't want to know me now.

Can you see the real me, can you?

I went to the holy man,
Full of lies and hate,
I seemed to scare him a little
So he showed me to the golden gate.

Can you see the real me preacher?
Can you see the real me doctor?
Can you see the real me mother?
Can you see the real me me me me me me

Sometimes, I feel I gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away
And I know if I don't, I'll go out of my mind
Better leave her behind with the kids, they're alright
The kids are alright

Haven't had a computer on my bike in a while. If I get curious, I mapquest landmark to landmark to approximate my mileage. I probably wouldn't remember those landmarks if I had the computer on.

106 miles . . . how many total feet of climbing was that ?

that I'm deferring to others who participated for such information. From Chappaqua/Millwood, we worked our way north to Cold Spring (bulk of the climbing), then southeast to Purdy's, on to Ridgefield, New Canaan, back over to Katonah, and back down to Millwood. He says we did 8,250 total. I think 8,200 of it was done in the first 20 miles. Them hills... they were moida, I tell ya! Average was mid 16 or somewheres about that.

James Bond was in New Canaan when we rode thru, his Austin was parked on Elm. Tray cool!
