New From Campy www.campyonly.com is reporting that the mothership is working on a compact carbon crank for '05. With the mid cage R.D. and a 29 tooth cog you won't need a triple to conquer the Alps, sounds like it's right up your alley Saab!

Cool. I tried the FSA, and I didn't really care for it. I didn't find it as stiff as my Campy Chorus crank. Although my old C-Record crank is the stiffest I've ever had. I find my older groupos just seem more efficient when it comes to power transfer.

....you won't need a triple to conquer the Alps...

Yeah, this is good even for those pros doing the Vuelta's Angrilu climb...I think they bitched at Campy loud enough the last couple of years.

Hey, you gear heads: Do you think you can put a 50/39 on one of these cranks?

That's a good question Russ. I was wondering the same thing. If it uses the 110 bolt pattern that the "S" people use then there will be all kinds of after market chain rings available but on the other hand if it does not, we'll be left with what ever Campy offers us. If we can put a 39-42/52-53 on it for daily use and switch them out to 34-50 for that Swiss holiday life will be good

.... a 39x23 as my lowest gear. This is the standard pro setup and it is what I have been using.

But I avoid the biggest passes too! :D

I briefly translate the major message of this news:

In addition to "Campagnolo is going compact!*A Taiwanese cycling magazine is reporting that Campagnolo will start shipping compact cranksets for the Record and Chorus gruppos this year, with 34/48, 34/50, and 36/50 chainring combinations." from campyonly, it also says that they will not be available until this July. How much? As expensive as the current Record and Chorus carbon cranks.

My personal message:
Now Campy wants to compete with FSA (a Taiwanese company) in the market of compact carbon cranks???

BTW, today is April 1st???

Saab,

I think that freaking Angrilu climb is harder than any of those :D whimpy :D TFD mountain passes.

Let's hope this is not a April Fool's day thing, because a lot of us (and a lot of pros, even) would really like to use this kind of crankset....

Good for Campy if they respond to the market with compact cranks. The carbon rings part, I'm not sold on yet.

BTW - FSA is an American company - based in Seattle. They might do their manufacuring overseas, but who doesn't??

FWIW:
Don't think many people here would be interested in the topic of the Taiwanese cycling industry. However, if you are, check some old news below----

If you are particularly intersted in FSA, try to find the keyword "FSA" or "full speed ahead" in these news.
