View Full Version : Using adapter for threaded BB in BB30 frame - concerns?

Looking at a second hand frame ti frame that has a BB30 bottom bracket shell. I only have cranks that use threaded English 24mm bottom brackets (Shimano). I see FSA makes an alloy insert/adapter for converting BB30 frames to take threaded bottom brackets. Anyone try this? Any issues I should be aware of?

I know one issue seems to be whether once the adapter is installed, is it in there permanently or not. Seems to be somewhat related to what Loctite is used. But other concerns? Creaky or not? I have zero issues with the bottom brackets I've been using (old threaded octalink).

Thanks for any insights.

Consider using one of these: http://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-brackets/bb30-outboard/bb30-outboard-bottom-brackets/bb30-to-outboard-bottom-bracket-for-24mm-cranks-shimano-red.html

I have a new Cannondale CAAD 10 frame with BB30, bought recently, that I put a Cannondale branded adaptor sleeve in it. Converts it to a threaded BB.

Like you, all my cranks were square taper, mid 2000's Campy, so this was only choice.

The bike shop that sold me the frame installed it.....and it creaked....make the BB30 sound.

Took it to a local Cannondale dealer who said he could fix it. He put it in with an epoxy of some kind.....now it doesn't creak. it's quiet.

He said should I ever want to use a BB30 crankset, he would use the Cannondale tool for removal....using a head set press. No big deal (to him anyway).

He also said....he knows how to install BB30 cranks that don't creak. I tend to believe him. Love my new CAAD 10 frame BTW. See no need to spend more for a fast race type frame.

Praxis, I have never seen anyone complain about them.

I will second the wheels mfg unit. 3-4 thousand miles now. A solid product.

I have a CAAD 9 CX with a Praxis and Shimano crank. Quiet as can be.

Buy a bb30 crankset? All those adapters seem to be a bit creaky after awhile. It's 2016 be gone with those cartridge bbs!

Oh...Praxis wont work with Octalink. Nor will the Wheelsmfg BB.

I think you mean smaller spindle cranks and BBs BB30 is cartridge bearings..BB30/PFBB30 again, an answer in search of a question. AND a way for frame makers to save $(big tubes to big tubes), w/o passing it on to.....you.

What is needed is an insert that presses into a BB30 frame, with BSC type threading in it. FSA, spam, makes one. A WHOLE bunch of antisieze when installing.

OP, right. That insert was what I was referring to in the original post. Guess I didn't make that clear. Was curious if anyone had used these inserts and had some experience to share.

Thx.

You saw my post above about using an insert?

not used the insert, but chose to go the full BB route for my C'dale based on recommendations here on Paceline. +1 on the WheelsMfg. Very happy camper.

I've used the KCNC adapters on a couple different BB30 frames and think they're awesome. No problems, half the price of Praxis, and you can get them in different colors. http://fairwheelbikes.com/kcnc-bb30-adapter-bottom-brackets/

If you have a 24mm spindle crank, you will be far better served going with one of the adapter-style BBs, like people have mentioned from Praxis or Wheels Mfg, versus the threaded insert and an english-threaded externa-bearing BB. Less interfaces to make noise/creak and no worries about the sleeve permanently bonding itself to your frame.
