I am in contact with a local person selling a set of vintage ~2005 Bontrager Race Disc 26er wheels cheaply. I think they may have. DT 240 hubs which is a giant bonus.

I was thinking of buying them and removing the hubs for a rebuild onto some CX rims. Can you tell me if a 10year old Bontrager-branded DT hub would be the same as a current DT 240 hub? Ie., could I put an 11spd freehub body on a hub this old? I'd am thinking of using them on my commuter.

Thanks for any feedback

D

D pal, I dunno anything about the older DT 420, but if your goal is to go 11-speed and build a bomb proof CX wheelset AND you are into Shimano....I would just get a set of these and be done with it.

Think he needs disc wheels.

For the OP, pretty sure in 2005, yes they are convertible to 11s with a shimano 11s freehub body and axle end.

The conversion is very easy. Even a non-mechanically inclined person like me could do it, (with a just a bit of guidance from youtube.) Once you have the conversion hub, its a 5 minute job.

I've converted a Hugi labeled hub to 11s so the Bontrager should work.

Here are some photos. I saw them and in spite of the dirt, the hubs were silky smooth. However, they were quiet, which suggests that they aren't DTs :(

Any experts care to weigh in? If it had no cassette, I could've tried to pop off the freehub body, but neither of us had any tools...

I would say not DT.

Agreed.

Bummer! They spun perfectly, but DT is what I am after.

Ryan, I was going to beg you to rebuild the wheels to 29er rims ;)!!

Thanks all.

yea, threaded axle is the giveaway...
