I'm holding out for a carbon X01.

Spoiler alert. This article includes some nice looking steel!

Just like the great Motebecane bikes we have...

Seriously, Bridgestone Japan had nothing in common with Bridgestone USA.
The latter was all about GP's designs.

Do we know of anyone else using hydroformed steel?

Bridgestone-Anchor is really popular in Japan still, don't know if they've exported at all though lately? I would love an Anchor track bike.

Giant is/was big on hydroforming aluminum though I don't think they did it for steel as those were their low price point bikes.

Wait, so the GP-designed Bridgestone's were actually made in the USA?

Grant Petersen was the head of Bridgestone's USA Division. He had input on the design and component choices for Bridgestone bikes sold in the USA but they were made in Japan. It may be that some of the cheaper ones had frames from Taiwan but all the ones I saw were Japanese with Ishiwata triple-butted tubes. The rise in the value of Yen vs. Dollar made their Japanese-made frames too expensive for sale in the USA. It's possible that today's rate of exchange might make a comeback in the USA possible for Bridgestone.

My first road bike was a Bridgestone 500. Suntour Cyclone II groupset, Sakae cranks (52/42) and a 14/28 rear freewheel.
Had a lot of fun on that bike.

The GP bikes were made in both Japan and Taiwan. The upper level bikes (MB0, MB1, etc.) were lugged bikes made in Japan, the lower level bikes (down to the MB6) were made in Taiwan. The road bikes were predominantly made in Japan. I was a dealer for Bridgestone from the late 1980's until Bridgestone abandoned the US market in 1994. Grant and Bridgestone were really great to deal with. When Bridgestone left the American market, they even rebated dollars back to their dealers who had paid for their seasonal orders. Totally upright move.

I sold my RB-1 in the winter and already miss it. I noticed these new bikes are small :) Max size might fit however!
