Just picked up a Harley Softail , that the previous guy put on a black thunderhead type of exaust . I happens to be black and im all for the the patina thing but its rusting up pretty good . Anyone have any recommendations for heat resistant type paint . I have use engine enamel before but never on the exaust .

I wonder if there is a specific forum for such a group of enthusiasts?

eh? What location? Ju in prison or something?

I would try regular Krylon... I know from painting gun barrels that stuff can take 500F+ heat just fine. How hot does a tailpipe really get?

I'd think grill paint would certainly work fine, too.. but it tends to take forever to cure.. if you're just trying to prevent rust and don't really care too much about the finished product - Rustoleum grill paint will maybe be your best bet. I mean, how pretty does a tailpipe need to be?

Unless there's a product out there specifically for tail pipes... which is totally possible.

The black Thunderheaders are notorious for this. They're stupid - powder will never hold on a header. It's way too hot.

Option 1: Rustoleum High Heat Ultra BBQ paint (30 bucks prep and paint)
Option 2: VHT Flameproof header paint (maybe 50 bucks prep and paint)
Option 3: Jet Hot ceramic coating (about 500 for an exhaust)
Option 4: Get rid of that awful fart box and buy a Supertrapp

I recommend option 4.

BTW, if you get VHT Flameproof primer and paints, use satin black not flat black.

I think you mean Einstein -

What about fabric tape?

Wrapping headers is bad. It increases the internal head of the headers and wears them out quicker. The only reason to do it is if you need to protect sensitive equipment (electronics) in an enclosed engine bay. Wrapping mc headers is beyond stupid.

Always you can wrap it with heat wrapping tape thing, it comes in black and white I believe, Should last more than painting because it wont crack due to heat.
