Looks like he was on a Domane. Wouldn't this have been a nearly ideal race for the new aero Madone?

Not enough room in the seat tube for the motor.

Spartacus almost always rides the domane.

Yep, even in the tour.

Yes, but Trek's advertising is that Fabian was a primary tester for the new Madone and asked "can I race it tomorrow?"

He said once at TREK WORLD that Domane is his favorite bike. Very stiff but yet extremely comfortable.
..... and then at the end he threw the bike. Even if I have luxury, I wouldn't have a hart to do that.
Great race, the "old man" still got it. :hello:

Good example where he is rating comfort higher than aero. He probably feels that the comfort/fit of the Domane keeps him fresher at the end than the Madone (even if they tried to increase the comfort level in the Madone with the new design).

my initial guess was better tire clearance on the Domane so he can run fatter rubber for those roads. but admittedly I don't know the details of what tires he ran or the clearance of either bike, just that generally the more aero bikes have far less clearance.

It doesn't hurt that his regular riding position is more aero than many rider's TT positions.

The new Madone has clearance for 28mm tires. So unless he wants to use a 30mm, he wouldve had enough clearance.

A major bike manufacturer said something in advertising that didn't bear out in the real world?

Yeah, Trek may now have a policy against such requests.

That bike will be going in his trophy room, it won't see another mile. Last year of racing, start it off with a win after a bad mid-late 2015 season due to crashes and injury. Every race he wins this year will be a bike less in the team inventory.

Does anyone have a picture or link of him throwing it? I don't know why but for some reason I just want to see it!

Thanks!

Seems this is a new Domane. IsoSpeed at both ends perhaps?

It wasn't really a throw. He picked it up over his head, and then when he put it down, kind gave it a toss. This wasn't like a WWF match where he throw it out of the ring.

You can see it this video, sort of. He just kinda let's it fall on the ground.

What bike has room for 30mm?

What bike has room for 30mm?

What? My point was that limited tire clearance was unlikely the reason to avoid the Madone.

The Domane supposedly does.

It's a prototype Domane with a split seat tube and what appears to be a split head tube: http://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/article/2017-trek-domane-teased-46573/
