Yeah, don't make the mistake I did and split the crank at the taper.

That one still smarts.

no, 637, mountain ones.

I had a used pair of 631s that ran on JIS , spindle seemed to insert deep enough. research on internet seems to say ISO.

A couple sites I found via Google mention that the taper was machined as a tweener, 2° but sized between JIS and ISO so either would work.

ISO, I believe. Used the same BB as 631, just different axle lengths. I have an NOS BB if there is a way to measure...

Is the cutter used to prep the bottom bracket 45 degrees or 55 degrees? Solve one problem, another one pops up in it's place...

45 degrees. Vecchio's has the BB prep tool. I thought the BBs were ISO taper as well. 114 or 116mm. Depending on BSC or the 'far superior Italian threading', even tho it wasn't threaded.
