I'd look for anyone affiliated with Hospital for Special Surgery.

I know my father used Dr. Figgy (Figgie?) for his hip, I'm not certain if he does knees though.

Edit: Figgie, and yes, knees. https://www.hss.edu/physicians_figgie-mark.asp

and hey, a testimonial from my old man (go figure) https://backinthegame.hss.edu/story/kevin-fitzpatrick/

HSS and NYU's Hospital for Joint Diseases would top my list.

Dr. Claudette Lajam (http://orthochick.squarespace.com/)

Fortunately I've only had to use her for diagnostics and recommendations, not surgery

...yet.

Dr. Feldman and his partner Dr. Steven Sheskier are amazing. Dr. Feldman did my shoulder (capsular shift after 5 dislocations as a short-lived college athlete), and it was a flawless surgery. They both work with amateur and professional athletes, dancers, and other people with sports injuries.

Full disclosure - Dr. Sheskier is a family member, but I'd gladly recommend him, regardless.

Find an orthopedist that's completed a knee fellowship and does a significant amount of his practice around that joint. Generally speaking about 5-10 years beyond residency/fellowship is prime technical time. Opinion only based on years of practice.

Dr. Kim Sloan is just south of NYC in NJ... he used to work with the Giants and another team or two that escapes me. Two family members have used and very highly recommend him. He had at the time (15+ years ago for the 1st surgery) about a 20 page questionnaire to work on before the appointment with very specific questions about the affected knee, he looked at these prior to the first appointment to get an understanding of what he wanted to see in the office.
